Oz,
Yes... good luck. I'm covered so I don't need to bid either.
Dave,
Two large rivets??? Like in the photo of the putty knife from the Class 41 that Greg (Wingnut) posted up thread?
Thank you,
Henry

Hi All
Henry
Yes I have one marked Irvington like the one in the Jan 43 manual, with big two rivets ,I guess my question is if you are building a 1944 set why would you go for the two small pins & the big rivet in the center when the 43 manual shows two big rivets??? Maybe I should have said are the two small pins with the big one in the center good to go early war to 43??? That was my question???
Thanks
Dave

Hi All
Here is my putty knife I will be using for my 43 kit I am building. I am not trying to offend anyone with any of my post's in any way! Just got to thinking about the time line of the rivet styles with that being said here it is. Your thoughts?
Thanks Again
Dave

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Dave,
I would use that knife in my later set without question. I assume that it is a bit newer since it more resembles the Union marked knives. I wonder a little about the metal used in the rivets though, since one of my keeper knives has steel rivets and the other brass. It seems like the brass would be more useful during the war for shell casings than holding putty knives together, but who knows?

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Dave,
No offense taken just trying to puzzle this one out myself. And... believe me I am a HUGE supporter of paying attention to the most minute details when it comes to tools especially when (in my humble opinion) it can make all the difference between having a period correct tool versus the modern day equivalent, especially when many manufacturers have not markedly changed the design of their tool for 70 years or so, i.e. "The devil is in the details".
So... I have a question please. Can you post a close up photo of the blade markings on your "Irvington, NJ" stamped 2 rivet putty knife that you posted up thread. I only have and so far have only seen "Irvington,NJ" marked blades with the two pin and one rivet handle design.
Thank you,
Henry

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Dave,
I was a away for a few days, and I am just catching up to this...
I'm not a big believer in collecting by RAPD figures to begin with, because they are often wrong or misleading, and in this case, I am not sure we have a consistent timeline, but FWIW, here are my notes:
1938 OQMG Circular 4 figure shows 2 rivets and a bolster
1939 Fed Specs shows 2 rivets and a bolster
October 1942 SNL N-19 is difficult to discern
December 1943 TM 10-475 artist rendering shows no rivets
March 1944 Class 41 (Navy ASO Catalog) shows 2 rivets and no bolster
July and October 1944 ORD 6 SNL G-27 show 3 rivets and a bolster
February 1945 TM 1-425 (Aircraft Hand Tools) shows 2 rivets and no bolster
April and July 1945 ORD 6 SNL G-27 show 3 rivets and a bolster
What is the "January 1943" manual you are referring to above?

Dave,
I checked with Phil, and the three Irvington marked putty knives he had on hand were all like mine with the one large rivet. He has a fourth one that he will check later since it is at another location. Two of the three had the brass rivet, one had steel.

I wouldn't hesitate to keep it in my kit. I don't think there's enough definitive information to judge any of these Red Devils as more correct than any others based on construction, except for maybe the Irvington vs Union logo thing. And I have had several of each and didn't pay much attention to that either, honestly.

Hi Don
Thanks for the pictures.I take it that only the union marked blades with two big rivets have the small pin before the first big rivet on the handle? Post war improvement? From what I have seen?
Thank's
Dave
