1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
I don't have these fed specs. But here is an SNL summary....
-----------------------------------------------
1938 to 1944
“BLADES, saw, hack, hand, Type-A, all hard, length 12”, width 1/2" or 9/16”, points per inch 24”
1945
“BLADE, saw, hack, hand, all hard, length 12 in., width ½ in., thickness 0.025 in., points per in. 24”
-----------------------------------------------
...and here is an amazing example!
I like my Simonds blades which are "red tops" with the GMTK-matching specs marked on the blades themselves. As you can see, these Starrett blades are rather simple by comparison in terms of blade marking with "STARRETT" and "MADE IN U.S.A." embossed on them. But the fact that there are a half-gross of them in a NOS box, marked with the precise GMTK specs, is what makes this the best collection I have ever seen. They'd look great in the top tray of a box, that's for sure!
They belong to Doug Page.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
I doubt it.
He asked me to help him “sort” his stuff at Aberdeen. Separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. Identify not correct, correct, and of the correct, what he should put in his keeper kit and what he should sell, and what were the current values. Doug is a ‘first wave’ GMTK guy, with Roger Briggs, Larry Long, Luca, etc. But reclusive, so you guys probably don’t know of him. It took a good three hours. He kept pulling out boxes. Every time we went though one box, he pulled out another. First from the bed of his truck, then the cab. It went from questionable to good to great to super secret stuff he kept under lock and key. The NOS box of blades came out near the end.
As a warning order, he had several, extra, complete and more or less complete sets of DOEs, including Fairmount (incl “A”), Duro-Chrome, and Barcalo. Also several midget drive sets, including Duro-Chrome and SW. Maybe they will become available soon. He tried to sell some things in the past with not much interest. I told him there was a surge in GMTK interest.
He has some gaps, too, so might be open to trades.
On an tangential note – he has a complete set of pliers, all Utica. I thought that was interesting after we just had a conversation here about the pliers not really attracting as much brand-matching as other subsets.

Interesting. Do you know how the side cutters were marked? I haven't ever seen a pair of side cutters marked like <U><ti><ca>. I've also never seen any of their pliers with the extra U.S. stamp on them...Wingnutt wrote:On an tangential note – he has a complete set of pliers, all Utica. I'm sure they're a great bet for the GMTK, and would like to see a pic of the complete set of pliers if he's interested in sharing one.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
Have been having a difficult time finding suitable examples of appropriate Fed Spec blades to add tot he kit. If possible, can some of you expand this thread with a few examples of hacksaw blades? The consolidated posts on the "GMTK" (MVMTS/GMTS) Gen. Mech. Tool Kit is great and keeps getting better with variations in images for each type of tool. Thanks for all of the research and effort you guys are putting into this absolutely fun aspect of MVs

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
Hacksaw blades are difficult for me. I occasionally find individuals at estate sales but almost never do I find any in bulk. Here are a couple of lots of possibly correct blades I’ve found in the last few months.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
Does anyone have an image of an actual Miller Falls Blu-Flex blade as depicted in their mid-1930 catalog? Is the yellow Miller Falls logo printed right on the steel blade, or is the blade painted blue and then the logo printed thereupon?
Thanks
Thanks

The 1948 catalog shows them in blue. Its a two color printing, (Red and Blue) I'm assuming the yellow was left white to save printing costs.

Its great to see these with an original label. Nice find. 12/24 blades in great shape are really hard to find.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
On my only legible Blu-flex blade the logo, just like your ad, is postwar. This is what can happen when one picks up every NOS hacksaw blade at sales. The only good thing is that I will never have to go to the hardware store again to buy a new blade. I do like the Heller blade at the bottom of the first picture.17thAirborne wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 8:15 amThe 1948 catalog shows them in blue. Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
How certain are you that the pre 1945 blades were not blue also? I was hoping to compare the 1935-ish ad with the 1947 ad. SOnce the early one is not in color, I cannot confirm that a blue blade is post war. What additional infor is out there to determine if the war-time blades were yellow printed on steel or yellow printed on blue on steel?
Just hope we can nail this down.

I have this used blade that very well could be older than the one with the trademark above it. Unfortunately, the wear from usage makes it difficult to tell.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Hacksaw Blades (41-B-1157)
I found a small batch of these Atkins Silver Streak 12/24 blades on ebay. They are marked differently from what Don shows above. I cannot find a reference for when the Silver Steel blade found in the 1931 Catalog became the Silver Streak. In any case, here is an image of the Silver Steel blade from the 1931 Atkins Saw Catalog and an image of the Silver Streak 12/24 blades in my collection.
If anyone has an opinion or factual reference for the Silver Streak as being 11945 or earlier please post it here.
