Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Picked up a couple ball-pein hammers today.
The one with the long thin handle with a red sash is a MAYDOLE. It looks like a tinker's hammer to me and I suspected it may be less than 4 ozs and I was right. It weighs 4.3 ozs with the handle.
The one with remnants of green paint that looks like a spittin' image for a VLCHEK ball-pein hammer in style and shape is a DUNLAP hammer, but it was surely made by Vlchek, a speculation confirmed by the "BT" mark on the cheek, which is Vlchek's Sears & Roebuck OEM mark. This hammer weighs 6.5 ozs with the robust handle, and is surely a 4 oz hammer, confirmed by the "4 OZ" mark on the butt of the handle. I don't know about age - if not 40's maybe early 50's, but it was too cool to pass up.
I'll post close-ups later.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
According to Lauver on the Garage Gazette, that Vlchek code was used by Sears from '37 to '38 and according to AA the first use of the Dunlap brand was in 1937. If those sources are both correct, that could actually be a really early Dunlap hammer. Kind of a cool find!

Perfect for a 1938 OQMG Circ 4 spec DUNLAP-themed MVMTS! EDIT: Now all I need to find are the 16- and 32-ozers!

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Greg, FWIW I have found that most hammer heads 2 1/2" in length are 4 ounce heads. It helps me identify them in the field where there are no scales.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Yes, phil, that's the principle I used on the Whiz. And that's about the size of the outline of the 4-oz hammer head on the Whiz. And I never go to a flea market without it! Depending on girth, though, and also steel composition, that principle - whether one is using a ruler or the Whiz - can be less than 100% foolproof. The MAYDOLE above is a good example. It's actually a tad longer than the DUNLAP, yet probably a good ounce or two less in weight. At $1, I don't mind taking those chances, but in this case, with an unverified brand, this wasn't a potential GMTK buy anyway. I just like tiny tap hammers.

Here are some close-ups of the Vlchek-made DUNLAP hammer...
I tried to get closer on the marking, but couldn't keep it in focus, Hopefully you can make out the "BT" stamp just below the "U.S.A." stamp

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Here are some more pieces that arrived from Cincinnati today that could be part of that hypothetical Dunlap set.
I hope nobody is taking us seriously!

Hey, I'm only half kidding! S&R is verified, and we know we'd have the elusive 11/16 x 3/4 DBE!

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
It might be more of an upper echelon set by now! It's really taken on a life of its own.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
That box looks like it crosses several echelons, functions, and branches of service, Don!
I actually picked up a few more DONLAP pieces (these look motorbike-ish to me) today. The separator ("pickle fork") is S-K. The Wartime Data Supplement to the American Machinists' Handbook (dated February 1944) was in a big Gerstner box loaded with machinist tools and tooling. When I started picking through it, the guy warned me that he was selling everything together, but I talked him into letting me have the booklet!

The mini water pump pliers sure look like the ignition wrench pliers.
Didn't Dunlop build motorcycles or bicycles? Those could be on-board bike kit tools.

DUNLOP were / are tyre people, motorcycles, bicycles, cars, trucks, whatever. No connection to DUNLAP as far as I know.
