No. They don't have hyphens and they have more letters than numbers. But, "HI-TENSILE" is a known wartime Armstrong marking for a national emergency alloy composition.mudbox wrote:Is the T# a TAXXI number?

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
I'd guess that the hand-added USA was the result of wanting to sell existing stock to Uncle Sam and sending it to the apprentices with instructions to add the 'USA' to every one.
After the first few thousand it is no wonder the 'handwriting' got a bit approximate.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
Cliff,
This is not a unique set of pliers and you have shown some similar pictures upthread but I wanted to share them anyway. This set appears to be NOS with a wartime finish. I never tire of seeing this type US stamp. Many of the tools from the repacks have USA added in haphazard ways and by various means perhaps in an attempt to keep the Brits from looting them.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
That wouldn't stop us Phil, just make them more desirable ...
The US procurement people must have required some sort of US or MADE IN USA marking on all procured tools. Any manufacturer that had a pile of stock they wanted to sell to the government would have to mark the US on it. That's why I've always associated the hand-marked US with tools procured -41 early -42 as anything made after that point would have US or USA cast on or forged in.
Something as expensive as a Thompson justified "US PROPERTY" markings, relatively low value canvas was ink stamped GI, no idea why tools were just US or USA marked when USGI to denote Government Issue would have been just another couple of scratches.

Here is a 1945 1" Snap-on socket I picked up at Tower Park last week that has US hand marked on the side. It's a little hard to make out.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
I found a pair of Crescent longnoses with cutters (41-P-1991) at the Tahoe flea today and was happy to see the U.S.A. marking. They are now in my GMTK sitting next to my Crescent US marked diagonal pliers.

Cliff, thanks for the lead on the Boker linesman pliers and pouch. They are stamped US so I thought I would share them here.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
So glad you won the lineman's pouch and Boker pliers Phil and at a low price tag ... They've gone to a good home. Nice long-nosed pliers Don BTW. I still find these confusing, but have at last acquired a pair of 6in round nose (?) Kraeuters which I'll add to my thread when time permits.

Found this 1/4" drive Walden ratchet, in chrome, with U.S.N. engraved in electric pencil.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
I just picked these up yesterday. 11" Kraeuter fence pliers with the WWI or interwar fancy serif style "U" and "S" forged in. Note the remains of the composite grips. The only other pair I have seen - on Alloy Artifacts - doesn't have those. Not sure what to make of that. Added later? Or did these WWI or interwar pliers actually come with grips? I would not have expected that.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
I have a pair of U.S. marked Boker linesman pliers with composite grips on them. Pretty sure a handful of companies were making aftermarket grips to add to pliers.
I don't have a pic of the grips, but the linesman pliers are in this pic. Seems like this grouping belongs in this thread as well.

Re: U.S./U.S.A. marked tools
These Barcalo diagonals had been discussed before on the Gee but it seems like they should be in this thread. The Walden 3/8" drive socket is one of the few I've seen with US stamped on the side.
