WARTIME SUPPLIERS: LIST A (VERIFIED QMC & ORD)

Post by Wingnutt » Wed Sep 24, 2014 8:41 am

LAST UPDATE: 7/26/2018 (See bolded entries)

As of 5/1/2015 this list now has two documentation sources:
(1) the CPA War Supply Contracts List, dated 1945, and
(2) the ORD 5 SNL J-2 and J-4, dated 1945.

It initially contained the names of US tool manufacturers who had contracts in the first reference (see WARTIME SUPPLIERS thread here: http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f= ... S#p1419594), explicitly for tools, with the QMC and the Ordnance Department (ORD). This list does NOT include the names of US tool manufacturers who only had contracts with the Navy, the Treasury Department (Lend-Lease), or other branches of the Army, such as the Air Corps, the Signal Corps, the Corps of Engineers, and the Chemical Warfare Service. The objective of this list is "GMTK" and G503. The Treasury Department, the Navy and these other Army agencies were not responsible for fielding general purpose second echelon maintenance toolkits for the Army, or the spares and replacement tools (commonly referred to as "motorpool" here) for the first echelon maintenance toolkits put on G503 vehicles by G503 vehicle manufacturers. As far as I know, only the QMC and, in turn, the ORD had that responsibility.

It now ALSO contains the names of US tool manufacturers cited in the second reference (as tool specifications when the ORD did not have an ORD or federal specification to use). While the reference includes ALL hand tools, I am only including the names of US tool manufacturers cited for G503 or GMTK tools. See this thread for more details on this reference: http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=252892.

For collectors who may want to distinguish the references, "(1)" denotes appearance in the CPA War Supply Contracts List only, "(2)" denotes appearance in the ORD 5 only, and "(*)" denotes appearances in both.

EDIT:

While my main objective was tools, I have looked up a few other manufacturers, out of curiosity. The list below contains the names of US manufacturers who had contracts in the CPA War Supply Contracts reference 1 (see WARTIME SUPPLIERS thread) with the QMC and the Ordnance Department (ORD).

Alemite Division, Stewart-Warner, Chicago, ILL - Lubricating equipment
American Chain and Cable Co, York, PA (WEED) - Chains

Walker Mfg Co of Wis, Racine, WIS - Pumps
Warren Tool Corp, Warren, OH - Axes
Warwood Tool Co, Wheeling, WVA - Tools, Shovels, Pickmattocks
Wood Shovel Tool Co, Piqua, OH - Shovels

CAVEAT:

Just in case there's any confusion, or you did not follow my directions to the original WARTIME SUPPLIERS thread, the reference used to develop these lists includes contracts between federal contracting agencies (Treasury, QMC, ORD, Air Corps, Signal Corps, Chemical Warfare Services, and several Navy bureaus) and commercial entities. In a G503 context, that would include vehicle manufacturers (i.e., Ford, Willys-Overland) as well as tool and equipment manufacturers. In a GMTK context, that includes tool manufacturers. In the broadest context, the reference includes any company that built anything directly for the Army, Navy or Treasury during wartime.

The reference does not include contracts between Willys or Ford and mfgrs of parts, equipment and tools that Willys or Ford may have used to fulfill the vehicle or vehicle toolkit requirements of their contract with the QMC or ORD.

Also, the reference is for "MAJOR" contracts, which the WPB identifies as $50,000 value or higher.

As a relative newcomer, you don't know the half of it, Tin!

We had no verified lists to go by before. The number of names on this list is easily ten times as many as previously verified or considered 'maybe acceptable' as a QMC or ORD supplier for GMTK and G503 motorpool tools. And some of those names are famous, revered US toolmakers. Hinsdale! Lectrolite! S-K! Wright!

I have said it before but it is worth saying it again..... That is an impressive amount of research, effort and dedication that brings tool collecting, either GMTK or motor pool G503, to a whole new level. Now enough with the laudatory comments, I want the book!!

What did you have to go on before? From everything I've been reading it seems like you already had a lot to go on.

Tin,
If that's addressed to me, and you're referring to information on GMTK or G503 motorpool toolkit suppliers, there wasn’t much of anything documented and verified before.

All,
While my main research objective is tools, I have looked up a few names associated with G503 equipment. Some of these have been found in Willys factory and Ordnance documentation before. Many have not. I added it to the first post.

Wingnutt, yes it was for you. So all the tool sets I have seen on here were put together using what info?

I am sure everyone had their own approach. Most of us chose brands that were available during the ww2 era. We also used information gleaned from the original Ford and MB kit that were found and presented here on the gee. There was even an original flame thrower kit that provided useful information not to mention toolkits from other ww2 vehicles. In addition, alloy artifacts provided useful info and Repacks provided more information on what tools/brands the government purchased. Lastly, the RA PD pictures did provide some clues despite their deficiences. So from all this we extraploated this info to the GMTK along with a dose of "Best guess". And while some of these brands were not found in Wingnutt's research a lot of them were.

Well given the lack of available info I'd say you guys did a great job putting these kits together.

I agree, Tin. The threads here are full of great analysis.

Personally, though, I think the War Supply Contracts data should be cause for a major shakedown, hotwash, and hard scrub of what has been generally considered correct or not. Lots of brands deemed 'acceptable' or even 'maybe' based on principles like 'longstanding prewar relationship' (eg MH-Ford) and 'other application wartime supplier' (eg Vlchek-Dodge) now look very doubtful to me.

It was easy and in many ways more convenient not knowing. But I would find it disingenuous of myself to put Vlchek tools in a G503 motorpool kit now, for example, when it's so clear to me how many tool makers the QMC and ORD had on contract (75!), and how many contracts (several 100s!), with Vlchek not being one of them. Vlchek was clearly busy selling tools during the war - to Dodge and the Army Air Corps. To theorize a less than $50,000 ORD contract for Vlchek when the ORD clearly had a sufficient stable of now-verified other tool makers rather than simply turn more attention to those suppliers, previously unknown, would seem willfully biased, parochial, and misguided to me. And that's just one example. Lakeside? Samson? The list of suspects is quite long, and let the culling begin, in my opinion.

I don't speak for anyone else, and I don't control JeepDraw, nor do I want to, but I will be using the War Supply Contracts database I have developed in the coming months to prepare my own standards for Jeep motorpool kits, and it will be organized by time (if supplier X wasn't on contract with the ORD until 1944 their tools can't rightfully be in a 1942 motorpool kit), not by tool, and it will include VERIFIED, QUESTIONABLE, and UNVERIFIED suppliers indexes, by tool.

Hi Wingnut:

Outstanding contribution! Thank you for all the legwork and gruntwork in reviewing the massive books to compile these lists. A quick question: I figured out "FE" is an abbreviation for "Fire Extinguisher". But I'm still stumped by "FAK". What does that mean? Thanks, and as always . . .
