Mud box seems to have all the luck when it comes to sockets but today I found a mix of S-K, New Britain, Plvmb, Mustang, Duro and Craftsman. A really lucky find was the 1/4" drive Duro tommy. These can be hard to find and are expensive if purchased individually off the auction site. A 16 oz Plumb hammer and Plvmb speeder 1/2" drive. A really messed up Vlchek chrome-mol 28S though it isn't the first wrench I've found bent in this way and a variety of punches by Plvmb, Syracuse and LS Starrett. Boker dykes, Plvmb DBE, Lutz file handle and a Mustang extension. Hopefully the lot will clean up well.

Talk about quiet the dilemma this morning. I came across a very cool OD cabinet. Definitely not what I was looking before but heck I couldn't leave it behind. Hopefully it will make a great place to store some wrenches. There were a few other nice finds including a shovel by True Temper, a Williams socket and some wrenches in their original box. I found some just like them in the repacks but none with a box this nice. The cabinet was at least partially manufactured by The General Fireproofing Company Youngstown, Ohio.

That cabinet is awesome. Looks very fin de siècle with that much taller than wider shape and the inverted handles.

What size drive is that Hinsdale hinge handle, Phil? Please say 3/8-inch!

Greg,
I've measured every way I can and done everything I can to make it 3/8" but it's 9/32". If you need it as a place holder you're welcome to it.

Haha. I'll hold out for a 3/8" version, Phil, but thanks.

Seems like I never come back from the flea market with what I set out to find. At these places its just the luck of the draw...the right place, right time and the right seller or not. The '43 Cavalier water can is in great condition on the inside and the outside only has some superficial rust. A '45 canteen holder and a late war light. A few 1/2" drive sockets, a 5/8" DI, 1" Walden and 7/8" New Britain. A Nicholson 6" smooth half round file. I did pass on a group of old Bonney sockets stamped "Not Guaranteed". Anybody ever seen that before or know why they were stamped that way? A folding Lufkin metal rule that has no military application that I am aware of but I've gotten in to a really bad habit of picking them up. Best of all though today was a '58 Coleman lantern in its original box with the funnel, spare parts kit and a few other Coleman items. I didn't need it but how often do come across a complete military lantern set up.

I'm always looking for "extras" to put in my GMTK. Things the average mechanic might have needed or added to his assigned set. Today I found an original box with a polishing cloth in it. After digging it out of an old box I'd been through many times before and taking it over to him to see what he wanted it for he said that he found it in a ww2 uniform. A very cool item but for shining buttons and belt buckles rather than tools. Also found another '44 Wood shovel....I definitely need to stop buying these. I'd love to find another brand or even another year. An awesome ammunition crate and an assortment of 1/4" sockets, D-I, chrome vanadium etc.. I have picked up many Army uniforms but never a Navy one. He was practically giving it away so I picked it up.

Nothing major today but a few decent finds. A Duro universal, Indestro pliers, Pexto snips and a Kastar gauge. A little rust to knock off but they should clean up well.

Rain moved in before 8 am this morning but it was worth the quick trip. I found a P & C and a Mayhew 3/4" cold chisel that were used in prewar kits and throughout the war and a Crescent wrench.

After a little cleaning I see that the P & C has the copyright circle (as Don suspected from my first picture) beside it making it post war. I should have spit shined it at the flea!

Two nice 14" pipe wrenches. The Walco is missing the spring which seems to be the norm for this brand whether its the 14" or 6" version. The Trimo on the other hand always seems to have retained its spring. A Bluegrass tape measure which I'll throw in the Bluegrass tool box I found last year. I always take a close look at Bluegrass pieces. To date there is no evidence they supplied tools to the military but its hard for me to imagine they didn't. I am hoping to find some indication stamped on the tool to indicate it was military issued. No luck so far.

That Bluegrass tape is pretty slick. Is that leather?

Mud, It is leather and a quality piece. The only thing missing is the metal clasp at the end of the tape.

A few years ago I became interested in finding a ww2 era radio for my study. Thats about the same time I met "The radio lady" at a local flea market. Long story short she has been on a mission to find me a radio. Today I heard a "I found you something" and there she was with this radio. She had cleaned it up and had it serviced. I didn't have a choice but to buy it. I didn't have the heart to tell her that its a '48 model. Oh well, it looks and sounds good. A rusty Bridgeport that I am hopeful will clean up. Hopefully better luck tomorrow.
