Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
I have suggested on e-mails that we might want to think of these boxes by generation as to what they would best be portrayed as.
With no backup evidence at all ( I can hear Greg taking a sharp breath here ... ) I'd suggest the following;
Generation 1: If the box only has a centre catch on the lids it could be USAAC, with or without one socket box lid as we have seen so far. Before June 1941
Generation 2: If it has a lock and two catches, or a hasp and two catches, but only one socket box lid then USAAF. June 1941 to September 1947
Generation 3: If it has two socket box lids and the number embossed on the lid then USAF. September 1947 onwards
I'm just throwing that out there as a proposition. Anyone have any opinions to the contrary, or better still, evidence ? Anyone see a patent date, for example?

This box is definitely post war with its riveted aluminum data tag. The decal is dated 69. The data plate lists the mfg as Diamond Metal Products Corp. It's has several paint jobs but the base coat is OD green. The handle is not original, its metal but made by Union.

Hello, Gents,
I found this Simonsen Toolbox at the flea market today. What do you all think? WWII or Post-War?

Leather handle, two catches and a hasp, one socket box lid ...
To me the leather handle and everything else suggests WW2 period, though the metalwork is very clean and neat. It's visually as new except for the handle.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Thank you very much for your assessment, Gordon. The gentleman I bought the toolbox from, stated he bought it from an Army surplus store over forty years ago. He meant to use it as a tackle box for fishing, but realized it was too heavy to carry around so he closed it up, and locked it in his shed. The toolbox remained in the shed, and hidden away, until late last year! Talk about a neat find.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Lucky ...
you need to do a little work on the handle and that's about it. The handle isn't even bad enough to need the sort of work I did on mine ( see April 21st posting up thread )
What to do with it though? It is so nice it looks like it has never seen tools.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Yes, I'd say so!
The handle needs some work, but I'd say it's in good shape given its age.
As for what to do with it, I've been putting together a motor pool impression for reenacting so it'll either act as a static display piece in my tent, or it'll sit in my WC51 in one of the boxes for future use.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Best example I have seen of the finishes too. The interior boxes are the standard enamel green, but the main box is wrinkle finish OD. Don't think I've ever seen such a good example.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Lucky find on this Simonsen box this weekend. It features an embossed tag, metal handle, and 2 lidded trays.
Perhaps the contract number on the box is a clue to it's vintage?
Navy gray on the inside and a light shade of OD (and rust) on the outside.
Here are some pics:

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Jason,
I have one in the same style with a different contract number. I Guessed at the mid fifties to mid sixties with the 11 digit FSN but no idea about the contract number.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Another very usable box - fairly obviously post-WW2, though I do remember the Simonsen advert showing a metal handle during WW2 so the handle isn't definitive.
Someone remind me when the FSN system started please? I don't have much of anything late enough to have an FSN on it so never took any real interest.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
I picked up a Kennedy cantilever box that is very similar to Henry's right down to condition. It has the one covered tray and one center latch. Luckily, the rust is mostly on the surface and there are no holes rusted through. I was happy to find it as my original one is the larger size #1021 not offered in the Class 41 catalog. Here are some pictures.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Nice, though the handle could use a little work ...
I'd call that late first generation. It has the single one big latch that seems to have been on these boxes when they first appeared, but it does have a tray lid that doesn't appear to have been on the very earliest ones.

Don,
Nice find! Out of curiosity what are your thoughts on replacing the exiting "handle" with the correct leather one?
Thanks,
Henry

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Henry,
If I find another one I will replace it immediately. In these images I posted up-thread, I had installed these handles on my first large Kennedy cantilever.
