36" Fawns foot axe handle supplier.

Post by Roger » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:23 pm

I know it's skirting the no ebay ad policy. But have found a seller who has a quantity of pretty nice looking axe handles.
I am not affiliated with the seller. Very decently priced even with shipping. And it is a fixed price listing. Just thought I'd give a heads up.

The same 36" Dayton Axe handle as used on the GI Issue 4# Axe is available special order, but has to be ordered in quantities of 6 or 8 thru the authorized dealer. I have a NOS GI Issue 4# Axe with the desireable slender "fawn's foot" handle on my CCKW.

Ok Joel I'll bite. Do you have contact info for the "authorized dealer" that sells the exact WW2 style handle? I'm more than willing to buy that minimum quantity IF they are 100% correct.

Check out BARCO Axe, they took over the 4# True Temper Kelly Works Axe production. A call to the Factory will get you an authorized dealer in your state or locality. I will buy a couple with you as I have a couple WWII Kelly Works Axes with damaged handles. I planned to send some along with a few axes to John Barton to be rehung. John was good at this and I enjoyed sending him GI Axe and Shovel items to fix up for his customers.
The BARCO 36" Single Bit Axe Handle is as good as they get. I have one NOS GI Issue BARCO 4# axe on my CCKW. I would even share in an Axe Order as I could use one more. I have some nice Kelly and Collins WWII Axe Heads needing handles and the BARCO is the way to go. The prices may be high, but I do not mind sharing a purchase.

I'll buy one axe too.

I'll throw some wood chips into this ring. To move things along and perhaps help reach a group purchase, I will buy one BARCO axe handle from Greg, Joel or whoever buys a small lot. I am also willing to buy separately from Joel (if he is willing to sell) one Collins 4 lb. WW II axe head that will feel at home alongside my Collins TCS radio set. Delivery to Topeka would be wonderful and I'll pay the purchase price in advance. Joel, if you are not going to Topeka, I imagine the 4 lb. axe head will fit into a flat rate Priority Mail envelope. I just fawn over thin axe handles and thin ankles. :P :P

Now that's a tough act to follow. I'm game to jump in with anyone willing to make a deal wilt BARCO. I'll see what I can do for a Collins axe head.

I'm assuming it's the same handle as the one on this 3.5lb ax available at Coleman's http://store.colemans.com/cart/axe-36-i ... p-263.html.

Looks much closer than most modern ones I've seen but still not 100%.

Both look OK to me......just going by photos. But if either need work to slim down I would go with the 8.25 handle. Both a darn site better than the ones from Lowe's or Home Depot. Square shaped. BTW I have seen a photo of jeep displaying the square handle and they are nasty looking!

G'day
Could any of the Aussies please tell me where I can buy the correct 36" Fawns foot axe handles in Australia?
I have tried everywhere with no luck.
Thanks

I have a couple WWII 4# Tru Temper FLINT EDGE Kelly Works and the WWII 4# Collins , the BARCO 4# with their Handle iscut and shaped the same as the WWII version .
Am ready to pitch in with anyone who wants to contact BARCO on an Axe or handles. It will not be cheap, there will be cheaper versions discussed, but the BARCO is for me.

Yes, but from the pictures I've seen it doesn't quite meet my 100% correct. I will grant that it is closer than any other currently made commercial handle I have seen. I'd like to see one in real life before I commit to a larger purchase. I most likely will eventually buy a single one from Coleman's to compare to my originals but that will be after the Topeka convention I think. Of course I will report my findings here.

I think you will enjoy the handle, I have GI Tru Tempers from the 40's and NOS True Tempers from the 70's plus WWII Collins and one no name, the NOS 4# GI BARCO is on a par with all the WWII Kelly Works and slim. Been an Axe nut on these and lucky to have had some original surplus stored away since the Post WWII period.
remember, the Axe Head on the Barco Axe from Colemans is not the Military Spec 4# and has a different profile as far as the head goes.
