Willys Jeep adapted by Hotchkiss to 24v MB

Post by EFA » Sat Jul 21, 2007 11:54 pm

Distributor has two suction inlets to auto advance diaphram. Which is correct and is the other blanked off or left open?

What is correct points gap

How is the steering column removed to allow the body to be lifted off

In theory, this jeep was mde by Willys in 1945 and imported to France. REgistered with French army 1948. Glove box label - chassis ITM0021966, but there is no tag on the chassis. Engine No. NPX739. None of this ties up with a 1945 MB. Any ideas?

You don't have to remove the steering column. You remove the steering wheel and lift the body off of and over the bare column. It takes some juggling with the angles but comes off and goes back on.

Have a look at Andy Carter's jeep site you'll find a whole load of info on the French rebuild factories and if you have the French registration number you may be able to find a little history on it's service with the French. You will also be able to find out when it was rebuilt from the ITM list.

Thank you Demon. French registration is 29th March 1948. Have now read that web site. Getting a little nearer to it's history.

Don't forget to remove the soldered horn wire inside the column first. The access panel is down near the frame.

The history of your jeep is very simple.
Its a pile of bits assembled from bits in a factory (in 1948 if you believe the data plate) after the second world war and until ITM put all those bits together it never existed as a jeep.

After you have read Andy's site get a copy of Pat Ware's book ISBN 1-903062-01-2

Now follow this link to a '45' jeep and see ther difference, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=001
Cheers,
Dave.

BTW,

the two suction ports you mention have nothing to do with vaccum advance, the are a required vent because of the sealed distributor/coil set-up.
One is connected to the air filter, the other one to the crank case vent/PCV vent line.
