POSTWAR JEEP TOOLS-M-201

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri Jan 13, 2012 4:57 am

The M-201 has the same stowage provisions for tool as do the MB/GPW. Did the French Army issue Cranks and Hand Pumps with these Jeeps? Why would these Jeeps that were in production thru the 60's and in regular army use thru the 21st century have provision for tool storage if they did not issue hand cranks and tire pumps?

Why should anyone care to discuss M-201 tools in this forum?

The M-201 and surviving WWII MB/GPW's maintained with WOF parts served in European military service until recently. They all have provisions for tools.

Yes, and the postwar M-201 and Hotchkiss MB jeeps all have the same brackets as do the wartime Jeeps.

It would seem to be a self-answering question....the French DID put a tire pump bracket on the seat so....one MIGHT assume they included a tire pump. the French DID put Engine Crank brackets in the jeep....so on MIGHT assume they included an Engine Crank.

Why would you doubt they included those items or not? Even further.....if there is an Oil Can Bracket on the firewall....one MIGHT assume they included an Oil Can.

This may help with the Tire Pump issue:

Now if the question was....."Did the French Army ALWAYS include the Tire Pump and Engine Crank in every jeep they put into service?"...then the answer could be quite different!

And Chuck, the French may have the answer to where all of the missing US GI Issue Tire Pumps went.

Well, being in a French Hotchkiss forum, one would aptly mention merde de taureau.
The French Army followed and copied all they could from the U.S. Army, so speaking of the pump they even had the 8-P-5000 stock number cast in the cap, but of course they did not use pumps from the U.S. government stock.
The oil can was marked Armèe Française, and so were usually the pioneer tools.
The last M201 did not carry an oiler.

Now, is it that surprising that a clone of the American Willys MB when carrying the same brackets would also carry equivalent tools?

It is also likely that the French had US Issue tools in their system..Many of their Surplus Jeep parts imported back to the USA are US origin, why not the tools?

One thing is U.S. issue tools being in the system, and one thing is the tools supplied with the vehicles.
French Army mechanics used ,in the vast majority ,tools made in France or in Germany.
The composition of their kits followed the pattern of their American counterpart.

Speaking of tools supplied with M-201 jeeps ,people should not rely on information where the word likely is present, since this is most often an indicator of unreliable conjectures rather than solid facts.

I suggest that interested people should have a quick look here:

http://www.m201.com/access/tools.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There, they can read for instance about French shovels for French M-201 Jeeps which are different from U.S. shovels, etc. etc.
