Ive got a real thinker here.
This block has no typical serial number. Here is what i can see,
Water pump boss . . . (X) (27) X U 5" (cannot fully confirm the (x))
Oil filter boss . . . . . nothing
Right side casting . . "3 19664 80101 HWOF" (EC)
Oil pan surface . . . . "3" on right rear of flange
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . "U 53" on rear seal block
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . "1" on front right part of flange
As far as i can tell this engine was swapped and the original frame is MIA, so i cant track its assembly.
Without a standard six digit serial number, i wonder if there is something significant to this piece.
I'm sure the historians of the crowd will be pleased to see this.
It is currently in good running order and is powering my (mostly) restored CJ2A.

Yea i got that part. I find it weird that theres no real serial number. Any clue as to the codes on the water pump boss? Perhaps theres documentations behind these codes?

Hi all,
An opinion and/or a couple of quick questions please...
Do the casting numbers: (285 T 57) 80101 HW(OF) at the R/H bottom of the block, give any dates of production? (all cast markings, except the '80101 HW' appear to have been rivited to the block, after production and/or at a later date - the 'OF' almost look stuck-on, in weld) - there's NO engine number on the flat by the water-pump, but the cast area under the oil-filter, where an MB/GPW has its number, appears to have been previously ground-down to remove numbers?
The engine also has a 'Delahay' rebuild plate rivited to the forward crankcase on the drivers side, showing that the engine was REBUILT in 1957...
I was told that its more than likely a rebuilt, late war MB engine, given that it was rebuilt in 1957 - and the fact that the normal MB/GPW area has been ground-down...do you guys think this is correct?

I'm a new member to the G503 forum. I have a 1960 M201 that's been accurate for the most part. The engine and driveline are all WOF except for the transmission its from a GPW and been retagged with a la Maltournée tag. Getting back to the engine the number stamped on the pad above the water pump is X, followed by a circle with an X inside of it, followed by a circle with the number 27 inside of the circle, followed by D62. There is no number stamped behind the oil filter. The engine has no "attached" tag but the casting on the lower right side I've attached photos hope this helps if it's not too late.

None of the numbers appear to have been ground off. The boss on the block behind the oil filter as far as I know was not used by Hotchkiss for reasons of identification, however since my last posting I found 4 holes drilled into the block on the left side where an ID tag was once affixed with rivets
