GPW Spare Tire Carrier Question

Post by Mark » Wed Mar 21, 2018 8:57 am

Hi,

I know the spare tire carrier on the GPW was changed from the 3 stud to 2 stud in Sept/Oct 43. My question is was hole for the lower foot added in the rear cross member at the same time as the change over or did they possibly start adding the hole to the cross member before actually using the 2 stud carrier?

I have an 8-31-43 GPW and the original rear cross member had the hole in it for the lower foot. I am trying to determine if this indicates this late August GPW came with a 2 stud carrier or still the 3 stud during a production transition time. I know there is always the possibility the foot was retrofitted afterwards as well.

If there is only one hole then thank bubba. The Spare tire foot rest requires 2 bolts.

Doesn't the second hole go in to the body, instead of the bumper?

Here is a GPW with the bracket installed...looks like it might have the upper bolt hole into the tub...

Yup, that's how mine looks but since it's still on the rotisserie I didn't want to commit until further proof came out.

Upper bolt through hole in tub and L-bracket that mounts to rear crossmember.

Chuck is correct, one bolt in the cross member and one in the body panel. I typed too fast and got ahead of myself.

I meant to include that August '43 is too soon for the 2 bolt carrier which accompanies the support bracket, that change showed up later '43.

Their is nothing that says yours didn't go through a rebuild program or was updated in the field but if it is August '43 it left the factory with the 3 bolt carrier.
