Dear friends,
My friend's MB has data plate with punched sign (in red circle).
Do you know what this exactly means? (QMC? Ordnance?)

Why it was placed here, on dataplate? Rebuilt shop?
Thanks.

"Crossed Cannons" indicate ORDNANCE DEP. and is OK for your data plate!

Here is another like yours....

It is called an ORDNANCE "CARTOUCHE" and only stamped after passing acceptance.

That was stamped in all kinds of things from rifle stocks to all manner of equipment. The mark consists of a leather belt with buckle that forms the outer ring, signifying leather working (in the early days of the Army that was a major item of equipment for horses and men alike). The crossed cannon tubes are Rodman pattern. General Rodman is buried here on Rock Island Arsenal. The flame shaped thing on top is a "flaming bomb or grenade "; the grenade part is the little circle between the cannons inside the belt, and all these articles represent the major items the Ordnance Department managed at the time; leather goods, weapons, and ammunition. They did not upgrade it when the internal combustion engine was adopted by the Army.
For tanks, they did; they put a tank superimposed on the Cavalry, crossed sabers.

After 1948 they stopped using that and started using the DOD mark which is an eagle in a box with 3 stars above and holding arrows in it's claws. That is what you see on M38 data plates. And M1 rifles built in the 50s.
