Steering box question

Post by ghiltgen » Wed Mar 14, 2018 5:03 am

In the process of rebuilding the steering box on my MB. I am trying to understand how the upper ball bearings get lubrication as the oil filler is well below this level.

Thanks! And now that I'm done with paint and laying out everything I can see the oil level will be higher than I thought.

Joel is correct on GEAR OIL following up the worm screw and that's why you shouldn't use grease. The oil will also lubricate the bushings on the sector shaft.

Nice photos. I remmeber to be so thrilled to discover this hole full with dirt. :)
I noticed the leak from the upper shims. Is a sealant the way to go?
