tinned areas for bonding straps

Post by JAB » Tue Mar 13, 2018 4:21 pm

I looked, but couldn't find it. I suppose I could figure it out by researching all the bonding strap threads, but before I go down that rabbit hole I thought I'd ask......is there a source for the locations of all the areas that get tinned? I'm working on (according to the tub gusset number) a Sept. '44 MB and so far the only obvious tinned area I found was on the drivers side fender just behind and below the junction block (BOD light ground?). I'd like to paint this Spring so I'd like to tin all the areas that need it prior to priming.

Thanx!

Paolo Batisti from thelongolivedrabline.com sells a book that has some information. In doing research for tinning my Suppression II 45 MB and asking Paolo about his research once they went to tooth washers on bond straps they got away from tinning in a lot of areas. The tooth washers would dig into the metal creating a good contact. This the Suppression I jeeps with only flat washers needed the tinning to make a good connection. Also I found no evidence of tinning on many of the common spots on my 45.

Off the top of my head the following spots I had tinned on my 45.
Hood areas that contact the radiator Bond straps
Radiator bond straps
Headlight ground cable
Connections on front engine plate and engine mount for drivers side bond strap
Connections for bond strap on transmission insulator and crossmember.
Marker lights on grill

You can also check out the 1945mb.com. Go to the restoring tab and then the electrical section.

No need to reinvent the wheel as this has come up many times in the past. I just didn't narrow the search enough to find it. PeeWee has an outstanding website with perfect pictures showing what was tinned on his jeep. The thread I accessed it from is here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=215683&p=1265386&hi ... d#p1265386

Here's his website:

http://www.willys-jeep-mb.de/

This should be the English language version of the tinning issue:

http://www.willys-jeep-mb.de/42567/42225.html

There are many other examples but this one looks like the easiest and best.

Here's a thread on where the frame was tinned:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=183135&p=1062396&hi ... g#p1062396

I never knew that it was, so it looks like I've got some re-painting to do!
