'40 Willys engine
I just traded for a complete engine, bell housing, and transmission from a 40 Willys sedan. The guy at the machine shop said the guy drove the car in. The machine shop guy built him a racing engine and took the 4 cyl in on trade. He has had it for 5 or 6 years. Sat outside but carb covered with bucket. Engine stuck but pretty sure not seized. Has f marked head and thermo housing. Carter w/o carb, 6v gen and starter. Anti-freeze ran out of thermo housing when I loaded it in my truck. Oil is very clean. Trans is t84 side shift--3 on the tree. I truly believe the engine will start and run. My question is----is there some parts other than the f marked ones that could be used for early slats or mb's? Any advice? Thanks, jody

Jody, could you post some photos of the pre-war engine and post the casting number? What manifolds do you have? I have a Model-39 block that I can't even seem to give away but I don't have the heart to scrap it, yet. The exhaust manifold that came with it is a type that was used on some early MB's. The intake manifold was the late war type, so not usable on a proper Slat MB restoration. The bell housing you got with your motor may be something that you could use on a Slat MB, but i'd need to see a few photos to make a positive determination.

Jody,
Years and years ago, at one of the meets, you gave to me some GPW head bolts to use on one of my GPW restorations. I had forgotten about this until I saw your handle in this thread. I just want to say Thank You for your kindness. The GPW engine and the GPW jeep is now in possession of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and displayed each February until the new Iwo Jima display is completed. Once the new Iwo Jima display is completed, the jeep will be displayed permanently .
Just wanted to let you know and say Thank You for your kindness of many years ago,
Frank

Re: '40 Willys engine
Michael, isn't the 38 block the type with the exposed cylinders? I forget which year that changed to the normal water jacket now. OOPs you said 39 model, didn't see that. Think the change was in 39 off the top of my head.
Anyway other than some of the bolt ons which might interchange (not many) I think there were some changes in the internals too. They were listed in the info on the older engines some of the old rebuild books had. Not sure what all was straight up compatible or used in factory MB production.
Neat to hear of prewar engines though.

Re: '40 Willys engine
Frank, i think that's what it's all about. I bought an mb and it had a ford head with several f marked head bolts. I was going to tower park so I brought them along to find someone that could use them. I was with mike Seymour and you and him were talking about your project--a Holden jeep as best as I can recall--so I figured you could use them. Glad to contribute in some small way. So many jeep guys have given me stuff over the years for my project so I think it goes both ways. I was thinking about Al Brass one year I was there. I was looking for a windshield and al said "come go with me--I think I know where one is". We grabbed mike's jeep and took off. We went over to where Tom Furrer was and there it was. I asked "how much"? Tom said "nothing. A friend of al's is a friend of mine". So you see---I'd trade a few f marked head bolts for a windshield any day! BTW that project mb got finished last fall and it has been a blast. I have so many people to thank. I plan on telling my story sometime but I would like some pictures posted and I am somewhat computer challenged. Maybe could persuade someone to post for me thank you for your kind words,Jody.
