Hello
I have been looking at GPW stamped engine serial numbers and have noticed that some engine blocks have a lump of unmachined metal before the number and some have a completely flat milled surface. I do not think that this can be date related because I have seen machined and unmachined early and late blocks.
Can anyone shed any light on this.
I would load some pictures but they are all on this forum and I do not kow how to link to the pictures.

Re: GPW engine numbers
In looking at an older post by Tom W. He indicates that the stepped serial number pad on Ford made blocks started in late 1942.

Re: GPW engine numbers
The "boss" is generally discussed as FLAT or STEPPED...and as Roger has posted, late 1942 was the change from FLAT to STEPPED boss styles. There are no "late" GPW motors that are FLAT unless they are replacements or have been ground and restamped so they "match" the frame/serial number of an earlier jeep.
I have motor number "GPW <-> 51122" with a FLAT boss and it is a July 1942 motor. I had "GPW <-> 85158 and it had a STEPPED boss and was circa 12/42.
