Post by Bill H. » Sat Feb 10, 2018 6:55 am

For those who are not aware, Al Brass passed away early this morning. he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was one of the original Odd Squad members here on the G. Off the OS, Al is preceded in death by Marc Open and Joe Potter.

Alasdair was a huge asset here on the "G". A bigger gentleman at that. He coached me many times here and his knowledge was immense. I am so sorry to hear this horrible news. A truly huge loss to the hobby. My condolences to his family.

I am so saddened by this news. Al tutored me a lot during my restorations 15 years ago as a 20’s something. I met him in person many years at Tower park.

He will be missed.

I really don't know what to say other than David Alasdair Brass was my friend and I will miss him.

We trade Christmas cards every year... he would send funny ones with Kiwi (New Zealand) themes.

Here we all were in 2004:

My favorite mental image of him is in his pink hat...

Found it... 2005 at Tower Park:

Great pictures and great memories of Al. He really knew how to wear the pink. RIP my friend.

Oh wow, that is a huge loss. June and I are heading to the South Island (we live in the North Island of New Zealand) in April and had intended to call in and see Al.
A great guy with a wonderful sense of humour.

RIP Al, go in peace.

Definitely sad news. I'm not sure there is anyone on the 'G' who hasn't at some point received guidance from something Al produced and/or provided. I was never fortunate enough to interact with him, but I certainly value and appreciate his contributions to the hobby.

I never had the honor of meeting him, but I learned a lot from his Gee posts. A high quality guy.

I'm sorry to hear this. My condolences.

I can't claim to have known or to have even met him, but I've often referenced his work as a sort of standard to work towards.

wow, very sad news. Al gave so much good advice over the years, I found myself searching for his posts over and over. But my true pleasure was meeting him in person at Tower Park. I was able to thank him for all of the detailed posts that helped me finish my project. In my eyes, he was truly a great person.

Condolences to the family....

Al was quite smart about jeeps and such, I remember him tearing into someone's Carter 539S while at Tower Park one time right on the jeep...just removed the air horn and bowl cover to delve into the guts without removing it from the jeep. A few minutes later the jeep was purring like it should be...resetting the float height I think....but it was quite impressive to watch him do "Open Hood Surgery" right on the jeep and then the "patient" drove away smoothly and idled nice as well.

Here is Al one more time at the MVPA National in Alameda:
