Yet Another Mystery Engine

Post by 17thAirborne » Thu Jan 11, 2018 12:13 pm

I took some images of the block below. It is mounted in a CJ2A salad jeep. I need to get back there and check the date on the casting in front of the 638632 number.

Can anyone identify what this is? It has sat in a junk yard for probably 30 years. I can't imagine anyone trying to turn this into a GPW with re-stamped block to make it look like a GPW. There has to be a mystery to this combination

No X6150 number on the block above the manifold.
GPW cylinder head
Oval boss, but a later SN 174593
Correct looking stamp with curved W
Wilson foundry number on lower RS block (I think) My image of the date sux, so I'll have to go back and lay in the mud to get the correct numbers.
Two letters stamped on flat boss by water pump
F marked intake and exhaust manifold

What do I have here?

Oz...no mystery at all! At the time, Ford was using Wilson blocks with the casting number of 638632 in GPW production. Ford could not produce enough blocks to keep up with there own production. I believe this began in mid to late 1943. The GPW serial number is indeed factory applied and was installed into GPW 174593 at the Ford assembly plant. The engine is 100% correct! Remember, some VEP GPW’s had Wilson blocks also with its GPW serial number stamped on the block....which is 100% correct.

Tom W. May be able to supply more data to support my statement and which plant GPW 174593 was assembled.

Is this GPW block for sale? I don’t have one of these variations.

Thanks for responding. I have not secured this engine yet. Give me a week to see what develops.

Added the fact pertaining to VEP GPW’s also! This is a nice find and I’d be very interested in it if it’s surplus to your needs.

I was going to say, that is the real, Ford, thing, and you should definitely snatch it up before it gets melted down and made into iron frying pans.

I have a Ford head that came with my Kaiser Supersonic L-4 on my 45 GPW, since changed out for a 47 CJ-2A block and head and the Ford head has the exact same square cast area. It looks factory cast to me.

Doesn’t appear so. Looks like the remnants of some casting flashing to me.

Dip stick has no rust and the engine spins by hand. Still working with the gent who owns it. You know how it is, when you show interest in something, they begin to have second doubts. :( WIll go and see him again next week.
