What is the body hold down bolt sizes

Post by Ben Hovis » Tue Dec 26, 2017 5:46 pm

Anyone know the bolt/nut size for the body hold down to the frame?
Can't find them listed in the manuals.
Thanks,
Ben

Ben,GPW or MB? may be some difference but they are 3/8NC. the lengths vary as to where they're located, floor to frame, see the SNL for those.

They are listed in the Group 18-Body under the section 1802A Body Panels.

TJ,Mark, thanks for the assist to Ben,my books are in storage for a move...
Ben,now that you have the TP & lengths, the last consideration-should you choose to consider it-is the (listed) use of the shakeproof washers which are generally considered as Suppression Type 2 fasteners...if your project is Type 1,flat washers and split lock washers are listed in the SNLs covering those vehicles.

Pretty hard to argue a August 1943 Willys-Overland Factory document, Ralph.

TM 10-1512 list of parts may or may not show the washers, but they were there. SNLs don't include everything, and some item are scattered among various sections.

Do a little research for WO-6428 5/16"-18 X 7/8" Hex Bolts in Section 1800 of the TM10's and SNL's. You will find reference in the Rear Body Panel to rear frame cross member. They are elusive in all of these manuals.

Hi Mark,I did see that 8/43 dated BOM. I had in mind Ben's Jan 43 MB- referenced in his signature block. If that is the vehicle being assembled, its time frame would be Type One.I don't know the cut-off date, but my Mar43 MB had all original floor fasteners, bolts flat & split washers, most Pals...rusted & finished for sure but no shake proofs.I used a Jan 43 SNL for/during the restoration,I no longer own it but recall no shake proof reference for floor fasteners.
I think I recall Dave Suttton's & Paul Beer's Jan 43s being w/o them also while we three talked fasteners. :D

I agree Ralph.

Interesting that the August ‘43 reference for the NOM-12 radio jeep lists shakeproof washers on the body mounting bolts, where the standard MB in August did not... An example would be the 53135 shakeproof Washer, looks like 1 or 2 per bolt listed for the NOM-12, just like in the later SNL for TYPE II suppression era MB’s. Makes sense that the radio jeep would use a better grounding system for the tub to support suppression.

Where the July ‘43 Willys Parts list, which obviously just covers Type I MBs, only lists one 53135 shakeproof washer on the entire jeep, and that was for the radio junction box installed after MB 217543. And just split style lockwashers for the body mounting bolts...

My Feb ‘43 MB still had several rusted out pal nuts fastened to the ends of heavily corroded mounting hardware, with no shakeproof/int-ext star washers on any of them, just a bunch of flat and split lock washers.

And to get them out of the SNL's, they are in there, one has to do a lot of "process by elimination", but the experience makes one much more fluent with the Army SNL's. I actually have a Willys Factory Box of NOS WO-6428 5/16NC X 7/8" Bolts that go to the outer positions of the rear cross member. Compliments of Lawrence Nabholtz back in the 70's. Lawrence was a wealth of information and did not hesitate to share hard to find information and parts.

Sort of like Mark T ? And he lives 200 miles West of Linden. Coincidence?
