What points, plugs, etc. are you running?

Post by 42swing » Wed Dec 13, 2017 7:56 am

This is related to my question about starting protocols for an MB:

Based on forum feedback, I want to do a complete tune-up on the MB to check and get everything back to spec. which hopefully will solve my starting problem, or at least give me a starting point. While I can get myself around a Model T or A pretty well, one of these "modern" cars which require a timing light is currently beyond me, so an old mechanic friend and I are going to tackle the tune-up in March so I can learn how to do it myself. I'll provide all of the materials, beer, and pizza of course.

What points, plugs, and wires are folks running in their Jeeps?

Sorry Chuck! On my screen the number is dim. Dinof. Yes, special order. Usually out of Indianapolis. There will be a shipping cost. Even though a good brand, I always order extras. Murphy lurks about. He especially likes condensers.

Try ebay for the "AL4556XP points". Standard Products took over the "Blue Streak" line....they will run you from $10 to $20 depending on who is selling them. Buy a couple and they will probably last your lifetime unless you leave the ignition on overnight and burn 'em up.

To all,

Standard Brand Point Set AL4556XP on Rock Auto Site is $6.92 plus shipping. Photo in Rock ad does not showing wick however.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/stand ... ints,11337

Total cost of two sets of points shipped cost $16.83

Hi Frank...
The rock auto points are the AL4556P....not the AL4556XP....and the difference is the wick is missing on theirs.

On ebay be sure the ones you purchase are the ones with the oil wick....AL4556XP. There is a set on their right now I think for $9.99 which is a deal I think.

Auto-lite 295 is also in the correct heat range for a normal L-134. They are cheap.I'd carry a spare condenser...

Guys,

I like to buy from Ron whenever I can and checked his store for the tune-up parts:

Ignition spark plug -A538
MB GPW CJ2A CJ3A CJ3B M38 M38A1 ignition spark plug

Ignition distributor cap, Brown -A1655 BRN
ignition, distributor cap, for the IAD and IGC distributors, bottom lip measures 3-1/8” dia., w/ 1-1/32" locator tab

Brown replacement cap, correct Brown color, for a factory class restoration, w/o Autolite marking

Ignition condenser -A1631
ignition, condenser

Ignition points -A1687
MB GPW CJ2A CJ3A CJ3B M38 M38A1 ignition points

Ignition rotor -A1658
MB GPW CJ2A CJ3A CJ3B M38 M38A1 ignition rotor

Ignition, wire set, L134, modern -930456
ignition, wire set, L134, modern, w/ straight ends

Chuck had listed a couple caveats on his list, i.e., brass contacts in the dist., copper core on the wires. Ron's description doesn't mention either, does anybody know?

Condensers are a crap shoot for the Model A's well, so I usually order several to keep the others as spares, also never hurts to have a spare set of points.
