Carb cleaner

Post by Mark Jesic » Sun Dec 03, 2017 3:29 am

At a show the other week and a stall was selling jeep carburretor cleaner. Do any of you guys use this ? is it recommended ? Im curious. For the record my jeep is running fine (at the moment), do i leave well alone or call it preventative maintenance and purchase some ?

Don't fix what's not broken but I guess any carb cleaner spray will do. For a thorough cleaning you could do a (short!) stint in an ultrasonic cleaner.

What did he say was the difference with his "Jeep" carb cleaner. Did it include some snake oil? :D

And of course he probably says it's safer for our carburetors then the others. In California, our legal, EPA certified carb cleaner is just pressurized air :D
It also has a picture of Jerry Brown on it with his middle finger.

Don't ask. Ok, he is the Governor of California. I will stop there, I have too much respect for Ron.

The only carburetor cleaners that actually work are the types that you soak overnight. I had a gallon of Berryman brand that worked great but it finally got clogged up with the stuff it takes off. The new type does not work as well though if you let it soak long enough it still does a pretty fair job.

The carburetor cleaners that come in a spray can are worthless. I use them only to confirm that a port is open in the carburetor body.

A good set of brushes and a little elbow grease go a long way with any properly used cleaning solution. Just be VERY careful around metered orifices. NOTHING gets poked into them.

Howdy,
M.E.K. works. Use it outside , and don't breath the fumes , don't get it on you , wear goggles .Rubber gloves dissolve in it . It flashes off as soon as you get out of it .Probably can't get it on the west coast . Use caution . really cleans
