Re: Are you running with Buckled Rims?
May I suggest another use for a bad rim, other than lawn decoration or chucking it out? They make pretty good spare tire wheels on the rear panel. No one knows it wobbles. And, it will still serve as an emergency spare. How many of us actually carry a jack and lug wrench to change a jeep tire and wheel anyway?

Re: Are you running with Buckled Rims?
Thanks for all the interesting replies to my post. My worst bent wheel is indeed the spare, and the other bent one is on the rear left. I will try to find a company (maybe a truck/lorry/bus company) with a 20 ton press arrangement to straighten the wheel for me, but in the meantime I'm still driving the jeep occasionally. The wheels are in good solid condition (no rust) and I don't think there's a safety issue here...but what do YOU think?.. It may concern the occasional driver following behind me, but is it dangerous ? The jeep always passed it's MOT tests OK here in the UK... Richard

Re: Are you running with Buckled Rims?
I read that the new wheels are made in Brazil.
And some operational history; the two piece "combat" rim, was a WW2 idea that never proved worth the extra cost so was dropped from all new vehicle procurement after WW2. The notion that a driver was going to repair a tire, and tube, by himself, in the field away from any organizational maintenance support is not a good use of resources. It was not a requirement after WW2 because it was not deemed necessary. After all, each jeep has a spare, and if you did blow two tires, you could borrow one from another jeep. They are rarely sent out alone. And your maintenance support won't be that far away and could bring you another tire in less time than it takes to fix one. It was a feature that was rarely used.
Now, Rat Patrol type missions might be a different thing.

I asked one of the UK dealers where there black wheels were made and he said South America. As I looked around his stand, another customer asked where he got his wheels from, he replied France. I was confused until he explained he bought them in France because the exchange rate made it better for him to source them from Europe. Perhaps this is where the confusion exists.

Equivalent to $6500 in today's dollars. People always think those jeeps were cheap; they weren't .
OTOH, a new jeep was $1200.
