Large pulsations in brake pedal....

Post by Wolcott » Mon Nov 13, 2017 10:30 am

The brake pedal in my '42 GPW has always been a bit hard. I have a leaky wheel cylinder in the back too. Basically, I need to go through the system and adjust it all as well. But...they have always stopped the Jeep well. The other day, when I pulled it out for a short drive, I noticed that the pedal would pulsate up and down when I pressed it. Not short and quick pulsations but slower and longer pulsations. I know usually this would indicate a warped drum but my question would be, how could it warp this quick with no, prior indication? It's like it started in an instant. Could there be another cause for this? Wouldn't a warped drum also produce a shorter and quicker pulsation, like when your disc brake rotors warp?

I plan on going through the entire system soon and haven't driven it since but am just curious about it. Thanks!!

Maybe it's the brake fluid from a leaky wheel cylinder on the inside of the brake drum trying to dry out as you hit the brakes. would ground that vehicle and take care of those brakes. Too much liability if you cause an accident. And then there is the safety issue for you and anyone in the jeep. Not trying to be a jerk, just don't want to see a fellow MV'ER get killed or injured!

I'd agree with Vic more likely you've cast a shoe on your old warhorse  either way she needs some love and care

Bent hub can also cause a pulsating pedal.
Same goes for brake drum.

Are your hub bearings loose?
Easy enough to check.

Thank you to all of you guys who've replied, I really appreciate it! As soon as it happened, I went back to the house. Fortunately, I was only a couple of blocks out. Obviously haven't driven her since and won't until I get it squared away. I really appreciate all of the suggestions and it gives me some concrete, items to look at. I'm leaning more towards a shoe lining coming loose or the loose bearings maybe. Whatever it was, it came on quick!

I'll tear into her and report back as to what I found.

Thanks again! Just another reason why I love this forum!!
