Re: Brass plate on glovebox?
Your chassis number reflects a mid October 1944 GPW. I believe the first four digits of your registration number should be 2058XXXX. Tom W. could give you a closer estimate.

Re: Brass plate on glovebox?
Your signature does not tell us where you live so I wonder if this jeep is in Europe. The tag could very well have been a property identification tag for a foreign government that received the jeep after the war. It could also be a property tag for a non-military government organization like the forestry service or fish & game or another entity.
Pics would be nice...

Re: Brass plate on glovebox?
Could it be a contract/census plate? Do Ausie jeeps have a M census number like the Brits? This thread has some dead links but may be of interest.

Please post a photo of your nomenclature plate and your frame serial number stamping.

Hi Mouses
You mention your in Aus and your jeep was bought from the military in 1947. Was it bought from the Australian army?
If so, your jeep will have an ARN (Army Registration Number) on the bonnet and probably on the rear, not a USA hood number. Although some did, but they were mostly the earlier jeeps.
Your jeep is absolutely an October 1944 jeep as shown on your data plate. That little plate is not the ARN or hood number.
Unless one of the database guys chips in first, I'll have a look tomorrow and search for your ARN.
Cheers
John

Re: Brass plate on glovebox?
Hi mate,
Welome aboard!
I am yet to find proof, but here is my theory.
There are several types of this plate, a couple with different numbers (different ranges) and a more fancy one with 'Harden and Johnston' (they were Chrysler/Dodge dealers-Sydney) on it, yet still the same 6 numerals.
My theory is that the numbers relate to a code regarding assembly of the vehicle when new. As the war progressed, the army assembled very few vehicles from what I can gather and contracted assembly out to various firms- even GMH had a contract to assemble GPW's (that must have been a fun one, GMH assembling Fords!).
Various other theories exist, some say rebuild plates, some say disposals information plates. Nothing I have seen suggests these theories (but then again, nothing concrete for mine either!!!!) as i`ve found no rebuild contract/tally info for wartime jeeps and the jeeps which have them ususally havent been rebuilt either, yet some have...
I also dont understand why some vehicles would have a plate fitted which doesnt seem to correlate to disposals records if it was disposals info. This said, not all jeeps have them fitted, so when it started and for whatever reason is unknown at the moment. I have mostly seen them on later war vehicles- 43/44 MB and GPW. My 44 GPW has one, yet a mates 45 GPW doesnt- both ex Australian army vehicles, arriving in the country from new.
Perhaps Mike Cecil (Michael C on here-https://g503.com/forums/memberlist.php? ... le&u=49991) has some info from his vast experience? He may even have your ARN (Army Registration Number) transcribed against the serial number, something I am yet to finish since kids and work took over!
These plates appear on more than just jeeps, so it is an interesting little aussie military vehicle information!
There is some extra reading here: I hadnt seen some of these before, yet found it though a google search around Harden and Johnston and GPW

-http://g503.com/oldsite/serial-numbers/ ... ord_id=804 (note Wes' comment from John Edwards regarding assembly- John has alot of info, yet sadly I dont know how to contact him to assist you if you wanted to try, but there is an email in the link below this one- edwards at bigpond dot com). I dont know what his proof is for that comment re the 73rd jeep in that contract, but has been collecting and working in the records for along time and he seems to be very accurate and switched on in the information he provides.

Is there any chance of a picture or copy of that letter you mention? I would love to see it please to assist with my research regarding Australian jeeps and their history.
Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Mouses,
You're in luck!
After looking through the books, I found your ARN number. The ARN for GPW 230366 is 158877
Your jeep was assigned to NSW
Hope this helps!
Cheers
John
