leaf spring funk

Post by 101son » Sat Nov 11, 2017 12:33 pm

Can anyone clarify the type/squared or tapered edge and amount of leaf springs Ford vs Willys and when the changes were made? I am looking at some used leaf springs and can find no 7 leaf fronts with the tapered edges and tapered ends. I may have a set that have the side tapered and could grind the end taper. When did the square end springs come out? When did they go from a 7 to 9 on the front? How about the rear? Not sure what to do about my worn out springs yet.

I mean 8 leaf on front (which I have) and I think I saw a 10 leaf front that did not have the tapered ends. Anyhow a little clarity on this would be great

Hello mate, there's loads of threads on springs if you use the search facility. Briefly ,the wartime springs are all chamfered down each side. The Ford ones are tapered at the end ,Willys square. 8leaf front and 9 leaf rear until mid '44 (I believe )then 10 leaf front and 11 rear. The spring clamps differ too.

Thank you. Don't have any idea on what to ask for when looking for the rivets for the clips do you? Is there softer metal rivets than others or are they all the same? Where to look for them?
I am going to pick up some used fronts springs and and see if I can make up a stack that is less worn than the strait right side I have now. I thought about, and still might, try to use the two springs that have the clamps already mounted from my stack and replace the remainder but don' t know if that will give me enough height.
Ive read that cold arching is a short time fix so don't want to spend the money on that.If they add a leaf it holds better I guess but then you have some strange looking leaf in there.

It's normal, the 8 Leaf Springs on G503's tend to have a flat arch after a few miles of use.

As Joel has pointed out....If the front springs seem to have a flat #1 and #2 when installed...read up in the SNL about the measurements the individual leaves should have and I think you will find that yours are not a big deal if they appear that way.
