Re: Doorway Safety Straps, Cast vs Stamped Hooks.
The best I have is a 6/9/44 MB with the stamped hooks. A couple in 1945 are stamped also.

I'd be interested in details on the 6-9-44 mb, do you know s/n and registration number?

So, when was the changeover to the stamped hooks?

Lloyd White Vol.4 says on page 90:
DATE STARTED IN PRODUCTION 5-28-43
Safety Strap Assembly
..."Substituting a flat stamping for the buckle and a new type of slide.
(To simplify construction of safety strap assembly)."
On page 95 it says:
DATE STARTED IN PRODUCTION 1-24-44
..."Releasing of safety strap end snap fastener and strap loop made of steel stampings as optional with present malleable iron.
(Inability to obtain malleable iron castings).

Re: Doorway Safety Straps, Cast vs Stamped Hooks.
There must have been multiple vendors of Door Way Straps during WWII, as there were many open combat wheeled vehicles. The colors of straps also varied as did the sliding "keepers", some were russet leather.

Re: Doorway Safety Straps, Cast vs Stamped Hooks.
Thanks Henk for noting the discrepancy of dates...I wonder if the May 1943 date was an Engineering reference as opposed to the January 1944 updated Willys Drawing date.
"Retraced and optional end snap added 1-22-44" seems to me to indicate that the use of the optional hook might not have been in use as of May 1943, even if paperwork AUTHORIZING it was dated as such.
I think we are more or less back to the search for ACTUAL factory line photos to support either style hook at this point.
Here is another pic; notice the steering wheel is not the steel spoked style that arrived in Jan 1943 (as per Nabholtz) and the hook is the cast style:
So...as of 1/43 it seems the cast type was still in use.....anyone else have Willys photos of early 1943 jeeps to assist with this? Do the Willys boys know the actual DATE of this photo?

Re: Doorway Safety Straps, Cast vs Stamped Hooks.
That Photo Chuck appears to be staged in that the jeep is not in running order.
it would also seem it`s an early slat grill jeep
First off no "S" on the cowl
Second the Black steering wheel
Third it has solid disc wheels
And what appears to be an unbolted scallaped axle shaft hanging out
Also to note is that the lower axe bracket is also un fastened too
Note the jerry can strap also without the later high guide if it indeed is strapped in at all ???
supporting again of a static staged photo opp
Noting also the position of the drivers arms and hands

Re: Doorway Safety Straps, Cast vs Stamped Hooks.
Geoff....good catch...now we need to see some jeeps with USA numbers on them and spoked steering wheels with a cast or stamped hook (factory photos of course!).
