Sheller Steering Wheel Plastic

Post by Road Hog » Wed Jul 19, 2017 5:20 am

Hello,

I want to restore my Sheller steering wheel. It has some small but ugly scratches/chips. I would need a small amount of plastic (bean size). Can anybody help? Will pay for any costs.

Best,

Marc

I don't know how you would obtain a Pea sized piece of plastic to repair a steering wheel, but if you went to Advance Auto stores or Walmart and picked up Rapid Fix, which is a two part glue, you would be able to make a permanent fix in the plastic that will actually bond to the existing plastic when you build up the glue with supplied powder, then sand and paint it.
A mechanic friend demonstrated some to me, placing some powder on his metal benchtop, applied a drop of glue, it solidified, and took a hammer to break it off, I could not remove it with a screwdriver poking at it hard. I would even recommend this more than JB weld for plastic at this point due to speed and ease of use. Wet with glue, sprinkle on powder, wait 30 seconds and sand as needed.

There are several videos on repairing steering wheels if you are enrolled at YouTube University. :D

If you need green sheller plastic, I can accommodate. PM me your address. I did the same thing with my steering wheel using acetone.

I did too but I have lost the piece of old wheel. I used a rasp and made plastic dust and used clear epoxy and made green plastic filler; it worked.

To clarify you used the rasp on your Sheller to get the same color of plastic? How much volume wise did you need?

You need enough plastic dust to fill up your crack, chip, or wherever you need it. The acetone method uses acetone to melt the plastic. I used epoxy.

When I used the acetone mixture, which was the consistency of epoxy, it essentially melted into the steering wheel. After it was dry, sanded, and polished I couldn't tell where the original damage or the patch was. It worked great.
