Update: via the CJ2A Page some of it's members work with companys that sell Omix Ada stuff. The top guy at Omix is now aware of the problem and has seen the pictures of the shafts that failed. Hopefully all who purchased the offending sectors through dealers will be notified soon. We'll see. I'm glad this is moving forward. John

Did the Omix shafts that failed also have problems with the splines?

Ben, the shaft was welded to the outside. The 7/8 OD shaft was smaller where it fit through the plate. You can see a crack or joint where the inside toughes the plate. So, not much shaft diameter is taking the brunt of the torque. Poor design. John

Here's a pic of one of those affected jeeps, on Tincup Pass in Colorado last week. Amazing story of how that jeep was brought down from the 12,154 feet summit! Basically, the tie rod was locked with a nylon strap and a chrome tow bar borrowed from a pristine Tuxedo Park CJ-5 that happened to join the group. The afflicted jeep was towed down a very rough trail to the 8,000 foot level.

Note: it's the jeep surrounded by butts... not the CJ-2a in the foreground.

Understood, and yes the construction of the subject sector shaft appears to be flawed. Was just curious if these also suffered from oversize splined end and that a hammer or impact wrench may have been used to help fit the pitman arm to the shaft which may have sped up the demise of the shaft.

The originals were a one piece forged unit with a hardened 'slug' inserted in the end where the lash adjuster would rub.

The ones that are failing in the field are a 2 piece design with the shaft necked down and inserted straight thru to where the lash adjuster would rub.

It appears to be a poor case of reverse engineering.

It is not the ones you were thinking of that did in fact have oversize splines.

Items that control your vehicle while going down the highway need to be sufficient to control the vehicle. Tires, brakes, steering, etc. These sectors are downright dangerous. This news needs to spread like wildfire. My bother in law and now yet another close friend have this very sector in their Jeeps right now!!!!!!!!!! Not all your Jeep friends will see this warning. We need you all to tell all your friends that have a Jeep. It's simple, and important. Thanks fellows! John

This is not good as it puts a cloud over all Jeeps with unknown steering gear repair history. Right now it is limited to MB/GPW and 4 Cyl CJ-Jeeps. Hopefully the questionable Omix shafts have a unique feature that can be ID'd by simple removal of the steering box cover.

Two Piece Lever Arm with Weld around lash contact point =Bad

One piece Lever Arm with No weld around hardened insert around lash contact point = Good.

Thanks to Oilly and SE Kansas for their photos.

Thank you Joe, the comparison photos make it simple for all who may have a concern to identify the subject Sector Shaft (Lever Shaft) aka A-745 in the illustrated parts manuals.
Best for those concerned to buy a 639119 Side Cover Gasket or two and take a look inside the gear.
Until now, I have never seen a replacement Sector Shaft constructed that way, Had I seen one prior to this you can bet I would have raised a red flag.

A-745 is the lever shaft Assy with A-746 Shaft, 639114 Lever shaft studs, 639113 Thrust insert, nut,, and lockwasher :)

Best to go with NOS with a T number ending in 998.
