Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
One thing unique to the T-90CJ and M-Series set up are matching drilled oil circulation passages that the T-84 equipped WWII Jeep did not have. Take a look to see if these have been drilled in your transfer. Many who did the WWII installation on the T-90 failed to notice this.

Thanks Joel. Not sure exactly what your referring too so I'll post a few pics as I break the two units apart.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Best I can describe is at 8:30 and 4:30 level of the rear Bearing where the X-Mission and X-fer join there are two oil passages. on the T-90 Gear Boxes and Transfers for T-90 that allow Oil Circulation between the two.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Thanks! I wonder if the wartime jeeps have that same 1.75" fluid level difference? I was thinking it is less than that.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Yes. The T-90 idler shafts are spaced farther apart than T-84, so the clearance recesses had to be machined larger, see the photo chronology below.wc56daveyboy wrote:So, my question is, after trying to understand all the posts here, did this transfer case have to be reworked to accept the T90?
Yours has also been machined for the larger intermediate shaft (1 1/8" or 1 1/4", I can't tell from the photo), so it will have civilian gearing.
Since it is a Ford casting (only made during WW-II?), it's more evidence that Dana-Spicer were buying surplus cases and putting them to use post-war.
Click photos to enlarge:
Original MB cases:
1st generation for T-90 (same as late MB w/additional machining for T-90)
2nd generation for T-90 - larger intermediate shaft and accommodates oil circulation.
3rd generation for T-90 - NO LONGER supports T-84

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Very informative thread! So I wanted to add my TC to the discussion. I have a 28 March 45 MB that was complete and never disassembled. Block was correct for 28 March (until stolen). The generator, starter, regulator, and Distributor all march dated (3Z). The transmission date is C2245. So with all of that I can be fairly certain this is a March 45 Dana T18. Here are some pictures
Side of Front Bearing Cap

J375300
Brake Drum 2-24 Cast date?
Brake Drum HH
Brake Drum N0-1
Brake Drum Bendix stamp
Brake Drum 47557
Transmission Date C2245
So reading through the thread I saw on the second page a discussion about a TC that looks to be the same month as mine. The serial# was J377267 with a cast date of 3-16. Mine is J375300 with a cast date of 3-14. A difference of 1967. Seem feasible for production over the course of two days? It is a 3/4" Intermediate shaft. What is differnet about my TC is that the date code by the rear main bearing cap is just 3-14 and not C1445. This layout was mentioned in the initial post as starting in 1945 and the TC mentioned earlier is C1645. It has already been professionally rebuilt so I don't know the hole layout behind the front bearing cap and if it has enlarged T90 idler shaft holes. With out verifying that this seems to be a March 45 TC. Thoughts?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Trying to keep this thread alive since it contains some great information.
I would like to invite more members to post the date codes and serial numbers of their Brown Lipe cases so I can gather more data.
I do have a question regarding an undated Brown Lipe case which I'm currently rebuilding. The serial number is J 329589 and the casting number is C-18-15-10-1, so I know it's a later war case. Interestingly, it has the earlier style "open face" where the main case and front bearing cap come together. Can anyone provide an estimated casting date of this case? It's the only case I have that does not have a date code cast on it.
Thanks!

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
I just acquired a 42 GPW that has a V-6 Buick engine, and the Transfer case stamp is C18-15-10-3.
I did not see this number in any of the cases you described in your post.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Carlo, you have a post-war Dana 18 installed. Not surprising since your jeep has already been heavily modified for the Buick V-6. I suspect you have a post war T-90 transmission installed?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
No, actually, its a T86-AA, which I understand supposedly came with the V-6. Previous owners must have used a engine/driveline from a later model jeep.
I understand they used the Buick V-6's in some jeeps from the 70's?
I haven't managed to get any engine casting numbers yet. Still researching exactly what I got myself into.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Chuck Lutz has sharp eyes, I have a NOS crated A-1195 Transfer Assy (Ext. Contracting brake, had it since the 50's and assumed it was WWII stock),
Chuck noted the Late Style Post War A-934 Air Breather (Top is loosely crimped on, no cotter pin). The unit is sealed with waxy cosmoline and has a set of new shift levers and knobs packed with it in the crate.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Ah, makes sense with that V-6 engine installed.
Keep in mind that your entire drive train is not factory nor a WWII motor pool modification. No doubt, you probably have a very "zippy" GPW with that V-6 installed. How bad did Bubba hack your motor mounts? Are you going to restore your GPW back to its original factory or war-time (motor pool) configuration? There are GPW motors, transmissions and transfer cases available if you are inclined to do so and you'll have your jeep back in its original form!

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Here's one I have that's a bit of an anomaly...a C-18-15-10-1 casting with the open front. There is no casting date on this case. Would this case be correct for my Jan '42 MB # 111414? I generally associate the open face case with the C-18-15-10 casting number. Im trying to determine when this case was used during MB production. Did they "reset" the serial numbers on the tag with the -1 casting?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Here’s another case I have. It’s obviously a post war case but if still retains the smaller counter shaft hole and the T-84 cut outs. The casting number is raised: C-18-15-10-4. Was this an early CJ case?
