Re: rear main seal info
Anybody else come up with a source for the Payen seal? I can't seem to locate it on the website that was listed earlier in this thread.

Re: rear main seal info
Alright, Joop finally emailed me back. Payen rear main seals for the MB/GPW run $39 shipped to the US. A little pricey, but I went ahead and bought one. They have such good reviews, paying a little extra is worth the peace of mind. Just thought I'd post the update in case anybody else wants a Payen rear main.

Re: rear main seal info
I installed a rope seal in my engine 4 years ago. No problems.. Had to take the engine apart for valve issues. During the rebuild, i was given a 'new' seal, guaranteed to work.
Well, i could hardly turn the crank with a large socket and wrench. After a while I opened it back up...... I found the seal to stick up quite a ways in the rear cap. I check with someone else and went to get a new seal. We fitted it in another cap he has, and it fit nearly level with the top of the cap.
Came home, and the same seal fit very poor and too high again. Then I checked a cap from a different engine. Seal fit perfect.
I measure the seal groove with a caliper, and the old engine measured a depth of about .242. My cap I was using measured about .222.
Clearly there was an issue. Then I learned that the early engines had a smaller diameter groove used the rope and the later blocks had a bigger diameter and used the later rubber seals.
I would rather not pull the engine to put in a rope seal, but will if I have to.
I have read about the Payen seals, but in all the discussions I haven't read of the size difference.
Will a Paye seal fit? Or where and what part number do I need for this smaller seal?
Thanks
Rick

Re: rear main seal info
I used the Payen seals about 10 years ago.
They came in complete engine overhaul kits from a US supplier, no longer in business.
I used the the Payen after I returned 3 of the Victor type seals, that were/are bad.
The Payen were perfect being very easy to fit & offset.
To do a good job the engine should come out....
You said the rope seal was good.
So why go away from something that worked fine for you?
The rope is very forgiving but the Payen does require a good sealing surface for the lip edge seal to run/seal on.

They must be one's that have Graphite. The current Fel-Pro issues are garbage due to the lack of Graphite as per the EPA mandates.
