Thanks for your reply. The carrier is in good shape so it'll stay until I come across a correct one. Perhaps I'll find one at Tower Park in a few weeks.

Hello All,
Thank you very much for all your interesting contributions to my question. I know now that I don't have to be upset with the number, but more on external aspects. I would be very interested to know the gauge of the metal used to ckeck when I will be about to buy a good one for my jeep.

Re: Jerry can holder
The two I have measure .093 thick with paint. Probably somewhere around .085 to .090. The commercial racks are half that. Whet ever you do don't get "commercial" and "post war" mixed up. All of the modern military racks are the heavy gauge steel just like the WWII racks. One of mine has no number, the other is modern military rack. Both measure the same.

Actually in the past I used to believe that brackets as fitted on Willys assembly line were unmarked, while the marked ones would be relacements or retrofits.
Now, as way too often in things jeep,I am not so sure.
Is there anyone who can confirm to have found a marked bracket/carrier/holder on a Willys with a safe enough likeliness of it being the very one originally fitted on the assembly line?
In other words, is there a possibility that a marked brackets is not what was originally fitted
Note the raised edge at either side of the inner bottom. This feature is a good indicator of WWII issue. It is on both the marked 42B and the unmarked. There is also a pattern to the three spot welds that typifies some of the 42B marked brackets.

Re: Jerry can holder
Many of the correct 42B brackets are faintly stamped, the numbers can be barely legible and be hidden by just one coat of paint.

Re: Jerry can holder
Hello, Just discovered this interesting thread..great info.
The thing is that my JC holder has all the wartime features but a different number stamped on the front, and it is different to the stampings commented here:
7064504 stamping
2mm thick (0.0787401574804 inches)
Thanks in advance

I believe that number you found is an even later stock number designation...perhaps even a NATO era number.

Re: Jerry can holder
What do you guys think of this "unmarked" Jerry/gas can carrier? It will replace my postwar carrier on my 43 GPW. From what I had browsed so far in this forum, the ones that have the "42-B" number, though accepted to be a standard in identifying WWII era carriers that "unmarked" ones were also produced during WWII.
Here's some facts from Tom: "According to Ordnance Dept. records the Budd Co. produced about 2,890,000 five gallon spare gas can holders during WW2. Willys-Overland received about 241,600 of the can holders and Ford received about another 174,000 for their GPW production."
Does anyone have any other list of known manufacturers during WWII?

BTT. Note the 3 spot welds on both sides, they look the same as the ones on the fender mounted Ford Black out light bracket.

Re: Jerry can holder
The 42B holders I have all had the number was not at all visible under the original thick paint until bead blasted or scraped.

Re: Jerry can holder
I have both 42B and un marked ones, but all of the heavy, recessed bottom, 6 hole configuration. I treat them all as WW2 correct. On Jeeps, Dodges, and I have an unmarked on that came on my M38; been there a Long time. Probably original. Maybe.
The one on my 63 M37 is the 4 hole type.
