Were these factory installed or a field modification?

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards
The fuel tankwell is a factory installed item the tank sits in. The only metal "stone guards" I am aware of are fastened to the REAR shock absorbers.

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards
Thanks so much for writing back Chuck! What I am referring to are those two metal rectangular pieces people weld onto the sump. Being as you purchase them separately and attach them to the sump, I figured they were a field mod and some did not have them?

Production line fitment.
Ford GPW tubs loaded in freight car
Willys factory line photo.
Note there is a sheetmetal guard on the rear well cap only.

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards
I don't think we are on the same page. Here are the stone guards I am referring to:
https://www.vintagejeeps.com/pc-254-40- ... 0-02k.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Were these factory installed or a field mod?
I also have the felt seal kit:
https://www.vintagejeeps.com/pc-1069-40 ... 0-03k.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Are these dependent on each other to work? In other words do I attach the felt seals to the stone guards or simply attach them to the sides of the sump? Any direction on this is really appreciated. Any photos would also really be appreciated.
One other question, if I were to attach the stone guards, do I have to weld them or can I use sheet metal screws or something? I just dread doing any more welding.

Hey Rodney
Chris(yorkshireman) is correct, as far as im aware. They were factory fitted, and yes you really do need to get your welder out to spot weld them into place. (quicker than trying to drill and then put screws in) Your felt stoppers will then be raised above floor level,when you slide them in.
regards Nick

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards more clarification
Thanks for the replies all!
I got the rear one mounted, but I am having difficulty figuring out how the one is supposed to mount right below the side hat channel where the fuel tank straps clip to. Are there any photos of that particular mounting any one can post?

The side piece is part of the tank well,it is flush with the inner face of the tank well,it lines up with the corner of the front lip that pokes up about an inch from the front floor level,then runs down the side to the rear one you have just fitted,so when it is fitted it looks like you have an edge running round 3 sides of the well to stop things falling in the tank well,i dont know how to upload pictures,sorry...chris

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards more clarification
Digging up this old thread on the metal flashing used to attach the rubber/felt fuel tank stone guards.
The JMP tank well I installed has these on the side and front - would an ACM1 tub have this spot welded on the rear also? Positioned as in the photo here?
I’ve never seen an old unrestored MB tub with one of these rear ones still present so just confirming. I imagine they fall off fairly easily after lots of years and corrosion...

After you replace the rotted out old ones on the tub, you then install the tank with Ron's padded strips attached to it and with the tank in place, install Ron's kit of three rubber isolators.

Re: Fuel Tank Stone Guards more clarification
Exactly Chuck.
Here’s the anti-squeak kit from Ron installed on the tank. And the tank is a tight enough fit that, like you said, the rubber stone guard seals will go in after the tank (but here’s a photo of them on the metal guards just to show the placement).
