Hi Sean

Of course a speedo may very well have been re-built using later parts.
But if I propose you a slat speedo restored with parts in accordance with the original model and a new "" NOS "" slat speedo rebuilt with moose slat speedo parts and an late internal from a late Motometer speedometer.
Which will you choose and which anyone choose?
Unfortunately Laurent doesn't know enough about Autolite speedometers so his information is a little mis-leading.
Sean, I know as well as you about Autolite speedometers, do not take me for a beginner !

Sean , what do you think of the difference between these 2 needles, about paint needle ?

Laurent

Say what you guys want, but Sean restored my speedometer in 2004/5 and though it took a while, I'm VERY happy with the results.

Laurent, I don't understand why you are so hung up on my new Nos slat speedo rebuild. I posted the entire rebuild, everyone knows I used the internals from a later Nos Motometer speedo and obviously people prefer a speedo built from Nos parts over a 60yr old rebuilt one as that speedo is sold pending payment and I have since had five others email me about buying it.

Personally, I would prefer my slat speedo built from Nos parts than one I restored using all the original parts. A speedo built from all Nos parts is just that...NOS.. nothing is worn. A restored completely original speedo has worn parts in it unless you replace ALL the worn parts with later Nos ones. The wear on some of the parts may be minimal and the parts re-useable but they are still somewhat worn.

Do you re-bush the mainframe and install new bushes on the magnet shaft, re-bush the needle bush in the centre of the magnet, fit a Nos jewel, fit a Nos hairspring and fit Nos driveshaft bushes. All these parts are high wear parts and after 60yrs of use many of these parts are beyond re-useable tolerances. If not then the speedo built from Nos parts will always be the better speedo performance wise.

I don't really know what your asking about the speedo needles, the speedo on the left has a nice face and number wheels but is let down by the cacky green paint on the needle, it looks like the sixty year old discoloured radium paint that is sometimes still on them and in which case the hub should also be painted.

What would you do if a customer sent you this speedo for restoration?

Sean , We have just a different opinion on the importance of respecting the original model of speedo with their parts in accordance .. It is not a problem !

I reason may be too as collector

About painted needles ,i wanted just to know your opinion (left or right speedo may be early or late slat speedo??)

Of course, the speedometer on your pict need a new reprinted face and complete restoration with NOS parts if it's possible or new manufactured parts
Customer is the king , i do what he want !

The important thing is that the restorator and the customer are satisfied with the work !

Happy new years !!!!

Sean, that one looks like mine! I doubt it is, unless you are Santa Clause, because I think mine is in my shop out back.

Can anyone identify this speedometer and give me a reliable source to have it re-furbished. This is from my 1950 CJ V35/U but appears to be similar or the same as a MB waterproof speedo. Thanks in advance.

It appears to be a late style counterbalanced needle Motometer....which might be the original one for your jeep. If you do a search for "guage restoration" you will learn all about this topic as it surfaces quite frequently.

The photo is not the best quality and perhaps the glass is only dirty and a complete disassembly, cleaning and lubrication will give it another 50 years of service...20993 is not a LOT of miles in terms of WEAR, many are found with 40 or 60,000 on them, but the condition of the internals are subject to heat, moisture and even dropping them!

If it is the original Motometer speedo to your CJ V35/U it won't have a trip meter reset arm at the back, so the trip meter can't be reset.

Just a quick post for now. I have just received my speedo back from France, where it has been holidaying in a Spa.

The unit was original to the vehicle, and is reasonable / original condition. The face was nice and clear, the glass was scratched, and the case only showed some age patina.

I emailed the restorer and we agreed on the scope of work and a price range. As it was the original, with a pretty face, I wanted a conservative restoration, not a full restoration.

The unit arrived back today. Fully calibrated, new glass, adjusted, oiled and shined

I will post some photos later tonight. Thanks to LC66.

Another excellent job by a master craftsman. I am sure it will look great back in the dash of your 503.

Now I just need to find some S-W gauges to go with my speedo.
