Floor hole questions

Post by Steve Bump » Thu Aug 06, 2009 9:11 pm

Just to clarify, are holes numbered 2 and 6 for drain plugs, and holes 1,3,4,5,7 for bolts that run through hat channels? These are original holes, aren't they, or do I need to weld them up?

Thanks,

Steve

Great! Then am I correct that numbers 2 and 6 are for drain plugs? What is the purpose of the others? I think they are for reinforcement of the hat channels, am I right?

William...maybe this is a tub design difference, ACM I or ACM II...but on a script GPW:

1)
2) Floor DRAIN
3) floor/hat channel/frame bolt
4) Floor/hat channel/frame bolt
5)
6) Floor DRAIN

Steve, I'm assuming you have a 42 or 43 MB?

If so, you have as in 1, a bolt going thru each pillar and hat channel. I'm not sure why Willys did this as it is not on the GPW.
2 & 6 are for the drain plugs.
3, 4, & 7 are thru the hat channel and frame.
5 is the bolt for the muffler bracket.

Mark, I have a 41 slat, but I think you must be right about what those bolts are for. Thanks very much, that really helps! I hadn't even considered that one might be for the muffler bracket.

Hmm...the Script Ford tub does not have a BOLT through the floor at #5 for the mufflet bracket....it has a 2 1/1" x 5/8" indentation in the floor and underneath you find a "U" shaped metal piece that has the mounting position for the muffler...that acts as a standoff to put the mufflet DOWN to avoid the hat channel under the floor...which is right next to the bracket...

Another difference from the script Willys and script Ford tubs I guess...

Where can you get the drain plugs and the threaded portion of metal that attaches to the body for the drains?

Hi Sean ,

the drainplugs you can find at crazy jeep parts in France .

The original drain holes ..... i removed them from an original body and welded them in again .

Some tried to refabricate / jig them , but it doesn't have the same result as original .

Jon... point here, has it ever been resolved on how the slotted vs. square head plugs were used?

I have period photos of the MB-MZ-1 where the square head is sticking up out of the floor.

The plugs are shown as:

WO-A-5138, FM-353055-S - Plug, pipe, I., 1/4 in. std.

Tom may be able to resolve that Mark. I had a mate in Tasmania make me the brass tapered plugs, I got the "sockets" from Ron.
If I recall Al found the slotted plug type in his unmolested GPW, the H700 key fits the slot btw.
It may very well be that a square drive is correct. I just don't know enough to say one way or the other.

There was a set of original Nos Mb/Gpw slotted drain plugs sold on Ebay last week.

Interestingly enough my GPW has eye rings threaded into the drain holes. Something done as a field mod? Bubba mod? Makes sense-they are easier to remove than the original plugs.

anyone with a photo of original floor drain plugs ?

I found some more info about these here: http://mvsparesblog.com/willys-mb-ford- ... or-drains/

What is so special about a pipe thread? Is it because the thread is tapered?

Brass seems to be logical - but the link doesn't show them in brass...
