Captain John. That is a great goal and what an honor it would be to attend the anniversary in your GPW!

Re: Tikifrei's '45 MB Resto
My model A Fords will have to wait !!! . My ford tub was very bad but saveable ,double floored all side body holes brass braised shut and buried in bondo , I then bought a much better tub which had come off a 43 GPW which had a repro tub fitted . This tub is ACM 1 which would have been correct for a late 43 GPW ,it still had a few "F" brackets still attached . My jeep is very motor pool as it has some Willys parts and a MB engine so is even more motor pool now !!!
All tub repairs done so now onto the running gear so should be on track for Normandy .
Captain John in same place same weather .

Welcome back to the G! Looks like you've made some good progress since 08, too. I'm jealous of that distributor! Keep posting pictures and updates. I'm sure there are plenty of us who will be interested in watching your progress

Re: Tikifrei's '45 MB Resto
A quick update....there was some worry I wouldn't be able to use my block.
The engine shop decided it should be ok as long as the crack can be fixed. I picked up and drove it to NY to be welded. I took a few pictures before dropping it off.
Now that it is cleaned up a bit you can see the date. 1/23/45
The yellow paint shows where the crack is. The welder said he will re-magnaflux it to determine how deep and if he can fix it. If he can after welding he said he will pressure test to block to make sure all is good.
The deck has been machined....nice and flat
It was a long day driving it up to NY and then back to PA. I am looking for a radiator shop to test out my radiator to make sure it is in good shape.

If you drove up to NY, did you take it to Metal Repair (Lock-N-Stitch) in Buffalo? I would have cast "stitched" together rather than welded.

x2 on Lock 'n Stitch!
If you weld the block you have to know what you are doing also...can't weld it "cold", gotta heat it in an oven first.
Having said that we run across brazed cracks in that area, stick welded (type?) and the Lock 'n Stitch. That last option is in my opinion the best.

Thanks for the info. I will double check what the plan is, welding vs lock and stitch. The shop is Hunt’s Machine in Schenectady NY, that is who the engine builder uses for this type of work.

I can see if the number to the place in Buffalo is in my truck and post it and you can call them and see who the closest metal repair of Lock-N-Stitch is in your area of Penn. I had a Cj block that was welded and leaked. I brought it to them and the welded area was now harder than crap and could not be drilled and tapped after the weld job. They were going to have to cut out the whole area and stitch in a new cast section until I came across a free WW2 engine complete.

Re: Tikifrei's '45 MB Resto
Just a quick update. The crack in the block has been repaired. They did the lock-n-stitch so all should be good. They also pressure tested the block and it got the all clear. I am very happy to save this block. I should have it back and assembled in a few weeks.
I also took a 12hr drive this weekend down to GA and then 12hrs back. I was able to pick up a few parts that I am missing.

Re: Tikifrei's '45 MB Resto
Glad to hear the lock-n-stitch worked out for you. I'm currently doing the same to a crack above the distributor in a GPW block I'm rebuilding. Also, I made the drive from PA to GA a few years back for an original tub...oh the things this OD addiction drives us to do

Re: Tikifrei's '45 MB Resto
A quick update.
I have the original dataplates but they were a little rough, and that might be too kind. I really wanted to use the originals if possible.
So.....I shipped them off to Robert de Ruyter in the Netherlands for his "refresh" I am super pleased with the results. I can't wait to get them mounted. I mean didn't they turn out great! What an improvement. He does amazing work in my opinion!
