MB grille questions

Post by JAB » Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:25 pm

Three grille pictures, three or four grille questions:

Anybody ever see this before? The little harness tabs that are supposed to be attached with screws and nuts have been replaced with welded (soldered? brazed?) tabs. Image

The felt has been replaced with a woven fabric (back side) but has the original appearance on the other side. The staples are perfect, as in factory installed. Was this type of felt factory installed on later jeeps? Image

I know the tear-drop shaped base is correct, but is the light with the spacer correct for another vehicle? Should I try to trade it to someone who's looking for that style or is it just a thick washer replacing a rusted out tear-drop piece? Also, where can I buy that old style braided wire/loom cover? Thanx!
-Jeff

The light on the left has a MB style base, whilst the light on the right has a GPW style base.

I was wondering about that, but there's no "tit" on the spacer and it's loose from the light housing. Shouldn't it be attached to the housing and have the alignment nub like the GPW style?

The spacers can come as separate pieces and the MB spacers don’t have the alignment tit.

One piece of the puzzle solved. Thanks again.

I have the remnants of a CJ 2A grille with those lights in it but the bases look slightly different than either of these so apparently there’s a few styles of these.

I removed the wrong brackets today along with most of what appeared to be silver solder and found the correct clips in a coffee can of misc clips I have from other projects. Now I need to find a source for that braided loom stuff. I know I’ve seen it for sale somewhere but can’t remember where or what it was called.

If Ron doesn’t have it, try cottonbraidedwire.com in Missouri.

Thanks James! I looked on Ron's site but didn't see it. Now that I checked again with just loom as the search I see he has it but is out of stock. That place you suggested calls it asphalt autoloom (something I never thought to call it), which looks like it might be what the jeeps had when they were new, before all the asphalt got washed out of the braid. Not very expensive either! Thanx!

Looks like they're out of stock too on the popular jeep sizes. At least I know what it's called now so I can look around the web.
