D-Day shipping from the states

Post by NickMG » Fri Feb 24, 2017 6:34 pm

I am very curious as to the logistics of participating in the D-day activities and shipping your vehicle from the states, logistics, cost, cost, etc? Would be a GPW going over. Looking at the 75th anniversary.

Thanks everyone,
Nick

Lots of car cross the Atlantic to the UK. There are many companies that provide the service. Some of the jeep importers to the Uk will have good advice, they will also have the connections to point you in the right direction if you want to get on the ferry from UK to Normandy with all the other MV owners. Best of all its in the English language . Your doing the right thing getting after it now.

A friend shipped two jeeps from San Francisco to Normandy in 2014. Used Alladin. Cost $9,000 for both, round trip.

I am also interested if anyone has any info on this. I went to this years anniversary and felt like the only one without a jeep ( I stopped counting at 43 jeeps driving around the beaches). I thought I would take the jeep for 75. any info. would be appreciated. Thanks

Has anyone heard anything from the MVPA about the 75th? Really looking to start planning.

Here is some info from another thread that may be useful until MVPA comes up with some more information.

http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=144&t=287588

Contact JP in the thread with your questions. He does tours in Normandy, he has plenty of contacts, and has volunteered to provide guidance.

I would also like to reinforce a comment that I previously made in that thread. If you do take your Jeep to Europe exercise extreme caution to keep it secure while you are there. Jeeps are highly desirable and are more valuable in Europe. They also get stolen on a routine basis.

I talked to Darryl Bensinger back in August or September, who wrote a few articles about going over in the MVPA magazine. He was willing to include me on a reservation for a shipping create when he contacts the shipping company he has used in the past. (He wont start the reservation process and finding out the current prices until this spring). He said 3 jeeps can fit in a large metal unit but you have to come up with a method to block them with wood so that they don't move around. The smaller size (there are only 2 sizes) will only fit 1 jeep I believe. It will be less expensive for 3 people to share the cost of larger unit. I am serious about going and am looking for 2 others to share the cost of a large shipping unit. From what he said the MVPA is not formally sponsoring or coordinating anything for a means to get there. There is a campground that he stays at not far from the invasion beaches but this is totally full already. I have some ideas about where to stay in France however. If you are interested in sharing a shipping container and are serious about going Send me a PM with contact info so we can start discussions about it.

What is the cost for the big container. Obviously it would need to be round trip. Also I guess it depends on what port you go out of?

Also curious if Darryl mentioned the average cost of the containers. Not sure I'd be interested in going over during the 75th, or any anniversary for that matter, as it's nice to see the Norman country and WWII sites without crowds. Still interested in trying to bring my jeep over at some point, though.

I started googling some various companies that offer the shipping. I'm going to try and see how they work and what estimates they can give. Since I'm in Atlanta most have operations out of the port of Savannah or Charleston but can arrange door to door service.

I'm wondering if anyone else has taken their jeep over there and driven around France in general. Wife wants to do the festivities but also spend a few nights in Champagne country and go down to Bordeaux. Do the trains still offer "car" transport services on the back?

Good questions about transporting the jeep around once you get it there. In regard to where you want to go, though, my wife and I were in France in November and did Normandy, the Loire Valley to get our wine fix, and Paris. We flew into Paris and headed to the Normandy coast first, then for the sake of ease, ended up heading to the Loire Valley next before finishing in Paris. If you haven't been to the Loire Valley, I highly recommend. Only a ~2.5ish hour drive (in a Fiat 500 :D ) from the beaches and a ~2.5ish hour drive from Paris - so not nearly as far as Bordeaux would be. The wine is awfully tasty, too 8) . Just a thought, especially if you'll have the jeep with you!
