Scored this the other day. A mere $20!! Was excited to find my second galvanized can "in the wild". Later I've come to appreciate the unique slab sided feature to this. No "X".

Excellent find!
Obviously somebody or something caused a screw-up.
I would guess this was overlooked (if known), as we desperately needed equipment for the war buildup when this can was made.
Who knows how many were made like this, but you probably have the only survivor (if any others were even made).

I just picked one up similar at the MVPA convention two days ago, SAMCO< Galvenized, Gas Can, QMC, 20-5-35-41 Looks identical to yours in condition

I'm very curious to see that. So far, and I'm not an expert by any means, but so far this is the ONLY can I've seen without the X reinforcing stamping on the sides.
