2.5 gallon Jerry cans?

Post by Rickf » Mon Feb 26, 2018 12:16 pm

There is a guy selling "RARE" 2.5 gallon cans on Flea bay and asking BIG dollars. No markings anywhere. Are these legitimate cans?

They were manufactured at one time, but not GI Issue.

I thought I had seen them but never in service or on any site that catered to the can crowd. So basically it is nowhere near worth 400.00?

I have not seen the can on ebarf, but the can I have is a USMC, 1973 made half size can with all the usual US features. I believe they were made for house hold use and were not a military item. Mine is a horrible shade of industrial green paint put on with a old crusty brush, it was originally red. They may not be overly common, but I have seen several for sale over the years, mostly at car shows. My file picture is too large to post here. Feel free to PM if you need more info.

Holy smokes Bat man, $400.00??!!?? I would advise that is hugely over priced. Next time I see one at a car show I will pick it up for any one who needs one. Maybe because I only collect military cans, but I just don't find it anywhere near that interesting.

Thanks for the item number, it is not bad looking for a rattle can respray. I did not notice any maker or date info on the bottom, maybe due to picture quality or many layers of rust and paint. Next time I am in the barn I will look at mine and see where the info is. I still think the price is way too much, but then again, many of the cans on that site are priced crazy.

And there were European issue parts cleaning kits that included a brush and two miniature German style cans, I may have a NOS Kit left for trade.

One of the farm/ surplus companies in Canada (Pricess Auto) used to always have the French Army VIN 10 litre cans for sale in their surplus section. I think they were around $18-$20 CDN each. Not sure if they still sell them as ive not been home to Canada in 3 years.

I bought a set some years ago 3 or 4 of them. They have a single handle and 10 L on one side. I have not looked for any other markings and can't remember where I bough them from or what they were claimed to be. Not the VIN wine can though for sure. Tall and skinny like 20 L cans

I dug one out today and it has 10L on the top of 1 side and HM in a raised section in the middle of the side. One the other side in the middle section is 1981 on it. Some non English stenciling on it is Red. I will post pictures sometime this week. Here is the can 2 are marked like this and 1 has no markings on it. 1 picture not shown just has the date 1981 on the square side where the HN is shown here.

Lining is in good condition and the nozzle fits very well.
