A kin to mine just below. Looks like both were built in the same week of 1941.

Maybe it is worth noting that the 20 figure is the sheet metal gauge...

Thanks. I misread it. Thought it was 4 digit date code. Week/Year.

Very interesting. So, the date code reads 1st. week of May 1941. Right?

No, the only date is the year. As stated above.
20 is the number of liters, 5.25 is the number of gallons and 41 is the year of manufacture.

5.25 gallons is equal to 19.87 liters.

The markings on the cans are to comply with ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) regulations for transporting explosives and other dangerous articles.

First number is the gauge of the metal (thickness).
Second number is the capacity in gallons.
Third number is the last two digits of the year of manufacture.

Below is an excerpt from ICC regulations:
Interstate Commerce Commission wrote:
Shipping Container Specifications

Specification 5

Marking:

11. On each container. —By embossing on head with raised marks as follows:
(a) ICC--5. This mark shall be understood to certify that the container complies with all specification requirements.
(b) Name or symbol (letters) of maker; this must be recorded with the Bureau of Explosives.
(c) Gauge of metal in thinnest part, rated capacity in gallons, and year of manufacture (for example, 14-55-39).

The 5-gallon capacity marked on most jerrycans is a nominal capacity.

Some early cans (like this Wheeling) were marked with 5-1/4, or 5.35 gallon capacity, but filling them to this level with gasoline would not provide adequate vacant space for expansion.

I'd guess $25-75 dollars. The original two tab cap is a nice touch, which I feel adds to the value. I picked up mine for $20 or $25 at an antique mall. But I've seen some sell on here for $75, search the forum for galvanized can and see some of the sales.

The boys in the motor pool got together and decided the U.S. can marking format was actually created by a time traveler. In the early 2000s he happened upon the MB GPW Technical forum on the G, noticed how many experts with opinions there were, and decided another forum needed some fun on it too. He decided the Jerry Can forum was perfect (because the G lacks a Paint Color forum). So he used his time machine to go back to 1941 and was able to influence the government to write the marking spec that was as descriptive as it was misleading.

One of the boys then suggested this time traveler could have reached many more experts by choosing the Trailers 1/4 Ton forum for something similar. Maybe he will?
