What can you tell me about this can?

Post by sam C. » Sat Sep 23, 2017 9:01 am

I'm inventorying my Gas and water cans. While I can't post a picture at the moment, I'm sure some of you will be able to ID this can by my description.
It resembles a British can (I think) with the port offset and oblong. The side is marked:
"W(arrow pointing up)D"

1950

RTB
CP&F

No other markings. I know it's Korea War era. Is it for gas or water? (I didn't think to look for a lining). American, British, or other?
Thanks in advance.

Sam,
W/I\D stands for War Department, and is a can of British origin.

Off the top of my head, I will say your can is for fuel.
I have a couple of British cans with the word WATER impressed into the lower side panel that are 1950's dated.
The above statement is only true if I am remembering correctly.

Thanks!! This past Saturday I scored a Monarch water can and a Monarch gas can. Both 1945. Paid $10 for the water can (has remnants of oil in it) and $15 for the fuel can. As I was putting them away, I decided to inventory my jerry cans and see what I have. I couldn't ID this one can and I don't remember where I got it.
