Small collection of cans
A couple of these have been posted here in the past.
I pick them up every time I see one. Over the past few years, I've come up with four WWII cans and a several post war.
Here's some pics of the cans and what I think is a period correct spout.
The 'Co A' marked can is a '51 Rheem. Included it for the stenciling.
A colorful bunch.
Left to right is '41 PSD Co, '44 Bennett, '45 Nesco, '45 Wheeling, and '51 Rheem
'51 Rheem
The spout has a long breather tube attached.
Thanks for looking.

I was able to add a water can to my collection today. I gave $7 for this '44 dated Cavalier!
No smell of fuel inside and the inside looks very nice.
3RD Section...?

Regarding the 1941 can, PSD is Pittsburgh Steel Drum, if you didn't already know.

Re: Small collection of cans
Hi Jason,
Nice set of cans there.I like the'3rd section' stencils...a section, with regard to US Army anyway,is a sub-grouping formed-or added to- from Battalion, usually Weapons-whose numbers differ from a Platoon or squad,i.e.,Mortars,MG,etc.,..Fireteam has somewhat supplanted this term,I'm pretty sure..it was utilized around the Korean war & before more so than present day.
Hope to see you in Spring, hope your search is going ok..

Nice cans! I only have doubts on the two eared cap of the 44 Bennet.
Possibly, it has been swapped in an unknown moment.

Re: Small collection of cans
Thanks Ralph! And thanks for the explanation for the '3rd Section' markings. I'm not sure how much service this water can has seen since it's in such nice shape. It may have been liberated from service early on! I like the cans with stenciling, they seem to add to the authenticity and overall patina, you know?!Ralph wrote:Hi Jason,

Thanks Luca! I agree on the Bennett can. The chain isn't even attached. BUT, the '41 PSD co can I have, has a tab welded to the lid, so I may switch them.lucakiki wrote:Nice cans! I only have doubts on the two eared cap of the 44 Bennet.

If I recall, the '44 can should have the 4 rolled ears, correct?

Re: Small collection of cans
I was able to add another can to my small collection over the weekend.
This '43 MONARCH water can followed me home. One of the more expensive cans I've bought at $15, but the seller wanted $25, so I did alright.
The liner inside is toast and it's been used to hold fuel, but I wanted it because of the deep dish (BLOOMFIELD) lid.
Here's some pics.

Re: Small collection of cans
Two weeks in a row that I get to add another can to the collection.
This one is a beat up '44 dated <NESCO>.
Some stenciling on one side and it's all bulged out like it got way too hot at some point.
The NESCO stamp on the bottom is very faint and different from the '45 NESCO posted up thread here.
And, if you look closely, the second 4 in '44 is a larger/different font.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Small collection of cans
3 weeks in a row! I'm a happy camper.
I netted this galvanized 1941 dated NESCO this weekend for just $5!
Overall condition is fantastic. I could probably fill it with fuel right now. A few very small dents but otherwise unharmed.
A nice survivor.
Unusual lid on this one.
Different NESCO stamping than the '44 from my last post.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Small collection of cans
I've been fairly lucky so far this summer on the can front.
Today I got another one. This is a first for me. 1941 dated NESCO screw type water can.
Does anyone know anything about the caps on this can and the one I found last week. Both NESCO cans, and both have non standard caps. Period correct or postwar replacements? I'm guessing replacements, but strange that they both have odd shaped caps.
Here's a pic of the caps from both cans.

Re: Small collection of cans
Mudbox those are the type of lids or bung caps that are used on 55 gal. drums. They use the same thread size as GI cans

Excellent. Thanks for the info. I had to ask because I saw another '41 Nesco can on eBay that had the same cap as the one on the left.
