Need Help Identifying This Item

Post by Steve Greenberg » Fri Dec 01, 2017 2:25 pm

Hello,
Does anyone know what this is and what it fits??? I got it with a bunch of M3A1 Stuart tank parts several years ago. It is 24 volts so it is not for a Stuart!
Thanks,
Steve

It is the or a standard 800 CPS Inverter mostly used in multi-engine Navy patrol aircraft such as the PBM and PBY plus maybe a few unlucky TBF's. Used to power several Liaison transmitter models such as GO and GP and some countermeasures sets. Input, as you noted, is 28VDC. Output is 115 VAC @ 800 CPS. About 800 Watts. Could also be used (but normally wasn't) to run the TBW. AFAIK, not used or not much used by AAF.

The only thing that I would have to base a guess on would be what I got for a few PE-206's that I sold, most recently in 2014. These are 500 Watt units versus the 800 from the Eclipse. The last two or three that I sold went for $105 plus shipping. Their external condition was that the black wrinkle finish was generally peeling. But internally, they were (and are) in excellent condition, yellow tagged as having been pulled from B-17G's.

I haven't heard any details on sales of the Eclipse's so could only guess at $105 * (899.500) = $168.00, times maybe 20% for inflation = $201.60. However, internal condition if well worn would reduce that.

I can pass the word on a couple of WW-II radio reflectors if you like. But I have no particular connections to any aircraft restorers, which would be the only other group with any possible interest.

US Army has a similar converter, but it's used (was used) for some Fax machine or such back in the 80's. It could always be useful to someone with a Deuce or modern 24V truck to make 115V for camping accessories or such.

No. Given that no one here is likely to have a GP, GO or TBW, the only thing that you could run off of it is incandescent lamps. It outputs 800 CPS. If you plugged anything with a transformer into it, you'd wake up everyone in the county (or parish).
