Re: PE-104 Power Supply Question
Just for reference (I thought I had posted, but it failed somehow)
A British group is doing a lot of restoration with modern components, they sent this out to my e-mail today:
Electronic vibrators are available to replace old, noisy, and “suspect” electromechanical originals; full details are available here: https://www.royalsignals.org.uk/vibs/ on our companion “Archive” site.
https://www.royalsignals.org.uk/vibs/
They fit within the housing of the old vibrator, 6/12/24V. Now if I knew what they did...

Re: PE-104 Power Supply Question
Keeping thread alive, has a solution been found on how to adapt the vibrator to the VBN module?
I found an online supplier of the modules, http://www.vintagecarradio.com/accessor ... -vibrator/
just need a schematic and instructions on how to wire it up.

Re: PE-104 Power Supply Question
I have the pin-out for the module, but need to determine if this circuit requires a negative or positive ground module (VBN-1 versus the VBP-1). This is a different implementation then the DY-88 power supply I’ve worked with. Sorry for the long delay, life has been getting in the way of any hobby Time.

Re: PE-104 Power Supply Question
Please PM me for the schematic with the Vibrator module replacement. You will need the VBP-1 (positive ground) for this. I have NOT built or tested this, but did review it with an engineering friend. I’ve redrawn the schematic showing the supply switch selected for a 12V Supply. When I get around to it, this will be how I will rebuild my PE-104. You will definitely need to replace the “dry-disc rectifier”. The Selenium devices age badly. You will need to experiment with a load dropping resistor in series with the more efficient silicon diodes. Also, most of the large caps will be “leaky” (passing DC) and need to be replaced.
Good luck...let me know how it goes!

Here's the link to the final PE-104-A solid-state conversion.

Hi,
I have successfully converted my PE-104-A power supply vibrator to Solid State using a VBP-1 module. I have written up an article on the whole process on my website, with a working schematic and photo documentation of the process. Pardon any typos, as I have had a LOT of requests from other SCR-284 (BC-654) owner/operators on how to do this.
I want to give credit to N6CAV and KA6BFB (Craig and Dave) for their incredible expertise in working with me on this (an entire country apart I might add).
You can find the article on my site at http://m37.crwdesigns.com/radio-set-scr-284/ towards the bottom of the page. In the article there are links to a PDF version of the article and a working Schematic of the modifications to the vibrator to solid state.

Re: PE-104 Power Supply Question
After I wrote the article on converting the VS-3 Vibrator to solid state, I had quite a few requests for where to buy the module. So, I spoke to the manufacturer and they agreed to let me be a dealer for the VBx-1 vibrator conversion modules. I have a limited supply on hand, and can always order more if anyone is interested. I have both the Negative ground module (the kind used in say the AN/GRC9) or the Positive ground version I used in my BC-654. Cost is $26.99 and shipping. If it's outside the US, please contact me first before ordering.
The link to order is at the bottom of my article on converting the Vibrator to solid state http://m37.crwdesigns.com/vs-3-vibrator-conversion/ under SUPPLIERS
