That is close to the county I was born in. Stark county. New Philadelphia is county seat I believe. Used to be a great Ice Cream parlor down there.

Barnwell SC police dept had a 1929(?) Thompson on govdeals.com a month or two ago, never saw the auction completed, and no results came in in search, don't know if it was pulled or didn't meet a reserve, would have expected price to be $21-24,000.

Got some bad news for you; unless it is registered, it can't be bought or owned by an individual; since it was bought the same year as the GCA of 1934, it probably isn't. No reason for a PD to register it. They can't be registered now.

Those old department issue MG's can certainly be sold. They do it all the time because. My old agency had an M1921 Thompson and the dealer it was traded into in the 1980's made a pretty penny off it.

They could be registered up to 1986; after that; they can't. So if they were never registered, they are not allowed to be sold to individuals.

The gun was purchased May 13 1934. The NFA was enacted June 26 1934. Am curious as to how the purchase records would not count with being registered anyway.

Clearly they are being sold, But if they are not registered, how can an individual buy one? This is the same problem as Grandpa's tommy gun in the attic. Other depts. can buy them and police officers can . I am just trying to figure out how one can get one? Also, all unregistered Machineguns theroectly can be registered by having the Head of the Treasury Dept sign off on them, though, this has never happened. They just don't have the back bone to do so! The only thing I can think of is they are registered.
There is a small military museum in the Tampa area that made news in the local paper when a GI donated a BAR to them. They printed the story. The ATF found out about it and advised them to turn in the MG to the local Sheriff and he could put it on the Dept's armory and then in turn, he could give it back to the museum. If he refused, the ATF would confiscate the gun. He did the right thing and it is still in the museum.

If a police department owns them they are registered and can be sold to individuals who can qualify. As C&R listed weapons they can be sold as C&R how ever police departments prefer to deal with licensed dealers who will in turn sell the weapons to qualified individuals.90% of the time the police departments have had these weapons sense before GCA68 and MUST have had them registered at that time as ALL police departments were required to do.However if the Police department bought them after GCA68 as dealer samples which police departments could do they can only be sold to a dealer.

A government agency is not the same as an individual. Different rules apply and they were able to "grandfather" them in as transferable weapons. Different rules for the peasants don't you know.
