TOW Missile Mock Up

Post by dcartledge » Mon Feb 10, 2014 12:14 pm

Has anyone mocked up a TOW for mounting on 151 series?

Or would anyone have some decent drawings I could use to make one up?

Thanks,
d

I have some of the parts for mounting that. Complex aluminum plate for the floor, Steel column, Seat and some other bits and pieces. None are simple to make if you want to make them original looking. PM me if you want me to send fotos of what I have.

Have the whole TOW jeep, and now the TOW carrier jeep with all tubes, caps, launcher, etc. the works.
What are you trying to mock up? the missle or a TOW jeep?

Mounts are readily available out there for the TOW jeep or the HUMVEE, problem then falls into the parts for the TOW system itself (now replaced by ITAS system that uses the tripod and launch barrel assembly from the old set)

Your hardest parts to get (not in order):
-Night Sight (demil item, but the outer housing is usually intact, as the front mirrored assembly has Americum in it and it specifies to dispose of how the unit RAD officer sees fit (no crushing) so they get sold off...don't lick it if you come up with one! $3K (housing can be several hundred empty)
-Barrel assembly (demil item easily resotrable) Unkown price (they are either available or in parts as fiberglass trash crushed)
-Day Sight (demil item but usually intact minus internal cards) $2.5K (I'm Seeking a Rubber Eye Piece if there's one out there!) :)
-Yoke (demil, usually by torch cut) $600 to $1.5K
-MGS (Missile Guidance System) demil varies, usually box is crushed, but can come out without cards on occasion expect $500
-TOW Battery for the MGS (hazmat item so not demilled but controlled disposal usually means they are hard to get) $100
-Cables to attach the parts together (rare enough, but a broken wire means they get tossed out) never sold as no one recognizes the large fittings as TOW components
-Tripod (used on several other systems, so it's out there, still used with the ITAS, expect $600 price) $600+
-Night sight batteries $20+
-Night sight battery box $50
-Night sight power units (vehilce power conditioner) $50
-Night sight bottles (depending on the year for display) good luck
-Night sight bottle box (again good luck)
-Missile tubes, the empty missle tubes themselves (Sportsmans Guide had them for $39 without end caps or retainers, listed as AT-4 tubes  )
-The end caps to the tubes (recent e-bay 4 for $200 w/ retainers OUCH!)
-The retainer metal bands for the end caps (see above)
And the rarest part (I have only two after 20 years of seeking) the small black umbilical Covers for the tubes (unobtainium, but worth .50 cents in plastic, they are only rare if being sought, as they are thrown out when the missile tube is inspected or fired)

Now for the TOW Carrier jeep you will need:
-Left and Right missle racks that clip onto the rear fenders (1st set of cut up ones were $150, second set of mismatched ones set me back $250
-2 Retainer clips for those racks (not sure what the spec is but they are likely microphone hooks inverted screwed into the inner fender of the jeep)
-The MSG spare battery holder that fits between the seats up front.(rare as no one knows what it looks like, but I think I paid $20 for one)

WOW the carrier is easier....Oh and 6 missile tubes with associated parts and covers.

Now a missile can be had in parts usually (and my 1st came off e-bay) but they are usually really beat up and were range residue, I've only seen one intact display missile in Civy hands and of course it wasn't for sale. Shame too , as I'd love to add one on a stand in front of the jeep on display. That and cut away of the internal parts version of the missle (i might make one with the extra parts I have for that display)

For the record, a little birdy didn't like my TOW setup on display at Fort Lee, Va. back in 2001, and set about to tell Army CID types that I couldn't OWN such a thing...Well after some scandelous intrusion onto my private property to inspect the system while I was at work(even using his Son as a guise to my Mom for wanting to see the jeep) the CID guys called Battle Creek Michigan and they sent a boondogle inspector down to check me out (just after 9/11 too). I enquired via Public Information Act release but never heard back from them, bottom line I passed their inspections, having restored the parts myself for display and pointing out the demil regulations in the manuals which they themselves had not bothered to read up on before hand.

Bottom Line: If you collect former demilled weapons of mass destruction, (or pop guns for that matter) some old maid that "knows everything" will be in your business and calling the authorities on you no matter how "right" legally you are with your gear or in obtaining it.

Last time I drove the TOW jeep to a display on a Friday accidently entering a blinding rain storm on a mere 5 mile trip to the event, the next Monday I had a phonecall from the local FBI guy asking if it was me that was driving it around last weekend... Wonder what he would have done if I had told him it wasn't me....

"d" What do you want me to measure or photograph? To most I would say 'Fugedabodit' in collecting TOW gear  .

PS: Anyone have 6 umbilical covers, one missile tube front end cap and retainer band, and the DAYSIGHT rubber Eye cup :o and I'll be 100% for a mid 80's TOW jeep and TOW carrier support vehicle display.

I have battery boxes and coolant bottle boxes. Also have some of the coolant bottles.

Have just about every manual and drawing set from initial fielding to the mid eighties (including training handbooks, tc's etc). About three large file storage boxes full.

Thanks all,

It is a guy in our MVPA affiliate that wants to make this one up.

I guess he would need drawings and or ipics or specs for all of the components.

Evidently he wants to mock up the tow missile 151.

Night Sight electric cooled or Gas cooled model? I just found a source for NOS batteries that fit both.

Back in the day when I had my tan deuce with the gun ring mounted with out the gun or mount, some old lady came up to me and said “what are you doing with that? You cannot own weapons of mass destruction. Go figure, nothing ever became of it. Wait till she sees my new project, the M102 105mm lightweight howitzer!
