Converto Dump Trailer 0885566 New Home

Post by 17thAirborne » Sat Sep 16, 2017 4:13 pm

I was fortunate to acquire this 1944 Airborne Dump Trailer this weekend. I traveled to CO and met the seller, who was gracious enough to trailer it part way south of Denver where I met him and transferred it onto my truck. It weathered the 475 mile trip to Roswell with no problems. I will post a few images, and take it to DMV for a title transfer on Monday, then the thread will probably sit for a while while I finish a WC12, get a WLA running and finish my 42WLA engine in a crate project. For now the trailer will sit covered until I can get to it.

1045WillysGPW. Thanks much. I unloaded it today and took some more shots for research. I flipped the tail gate back to the proper side and noticed the USA 0895566 id still visible.(Photo shop stencil below where just barely visible) Real happy to see that :)

Great resto candidate and looks to have everything still attached to it! Complete trailers are hard to find in that condition and as you posted, the search for the reflector and lighting parts seems to be the only items needed for a killer resto!

Chuck thanks. It does seem to have most of the parts. I need to order a lunette and stanchion. I have two tail gate locks coming, but I will need to drill the holes for the rod and make a new rod as well. THe lunette that is on it now is welded to the tube. Overall, this should be a straight forward job with little troubles. I would love to start on it now, but with three other projects stacked up I need to be patient :(

Too humid to sand blast, too rainy to ride, awaiting parts for the Dodge, thankfully I have a project that needs attention. One hour of work with a cut-off wheel and mostly a hacksaw. I do not need to do my nightly push ups tonight

Another rainy day so I'm on the trailer again. The permanent boy lock on my trailer has a broken wing on the nut. I tried to turn it slightly and the other broke off. I looked all over for a suitable replacement and found something similar at Grainer, although the quantity is 10 ea. It matches the profile very closely except the outer portions of the wings are completely rounded whereas on the original. the profile comes to a point almost.

Nut, wing bolt permanent body lock, 1/2" - 13. It is 2.25" across the width of the wings. (Updated width from previous post sorry)

I cannot find a reference, and most companies list Grade 2 Malleable Iron. Given that they are so soft I would think this is the correct material.

Here is a better example just a slight difference on the very tip but they are 2.25". These are slightly more pointed. Could be gently filed to exactly match

I had to order a 10 pk of the wing nuts, so when the come in I'll post some images and if anyone with a converto wants a wing nut I'll send them out cheap.

Parts of the KD lens for trailer sides. The back is pressed in with a round thin gasket to seal out moisture.

I am finding that the SP NO 14 are hard to find, whereas the Stimsonite 12A are available. For $10 they would make a nice lens supplement and IF the NO 14 turn up later we can swap them out. Besides, who will notice the tiny raised lettering on the lens.
