Is This An Artillery Gun Muzzle Cover?

Post by AirMechanic » Sat Sep 16, 2017 2:36 pm

Does anyone know what this item is or how old it is? There is an opening at the end with the leather strap with the buckle that is not pictured. Due to this, I believe this item is a muzzle cover for an artillery gun, but I'm not really sure. Any help would be appreciated!

a gun with a muzzle opening that large would likely have a muzzle brake that would be much larger than that cover.....maybe a cover for a mortar tube say 4.2?

Could e-mail the company:
http://www.estexmfg.com/category.aspx?S ... D=3&Page=1
Their web page is active and has three pages of canvas goods shown. A search with the numbers failed to turn it up on their web site, seems they make a lot of Linesman Bucket type pieces though and nuts and bolts bags.

I use one of these for a muzzle cover on my Krupp M73 1893 field piece, fits beautifully. Might cvoer a Tripod head or antenna pole end, Pintle socket mount, water treatment system pipe cover as well.

Looks like this - https://global.rakuten.com/en/store/wip ... /10007307/

It says it is "rare" and "unobtainable".

You might be sitting on a gold mine. :D

AirMech,

What you have there according to old Fed-Log is a Bag, Tools and Spare Parts, the NSN 8105-01-286-6307. I acquired one just like it at Aberdeen a few years ago and it fits the 106-mm RR perfect, only recently have I found the correct muzzle cover for the RR. Hope that helps!

I appreciate all the replies. I would have never figured out what this item really was, as the leather handle on the bottom really threw me off.

That's a funny Japanese site for sure.
Perhaps looking at some photos of our modern Mortars might offer up another idea as a muzzle cover.
