RHR Stake Pocket
This is the RHR pocket.
Had to cut more out of it just to get to the inner section.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Did some more work today.
Finally finished the RH side,,,,, well I thought I had until I touched some of the side with the Wire wheel in the grinder. And found some more rust. Nothing too extreme but enough to make me sad. I was hoping I had finished the RH side.
It took almost 3 hrs to do the RHR corner section. Just no room to play with and I wanted to get it all neat and tidy. But it looks great now.
Everything now on the RH side expect for the new rust if found has been cut, sand blasted and primed ready for some new iron.
Please see photos attached.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hello my friends,
I am back. I have been away almost a month for work and then sick on and off for another 2 weeks. So I have finally gotten time to touch the Jimmy again.
I have a just about finished cutting out the rust from the rear tray. Basically all I have left is the last 2 stake pockets and I can then get to putting brand new 3mm plate steel back into the tray. Which, trust me I cannot wait for. I am sick of cutting rust out. Time to start making the tray look like a GMC tray instead of Swiss cheese.
I have even found rust between the bearers and the tray. Looks as if the dirty and water has gotten between the plate steel over the years.

Found this small little hole.
Cut it out only to find the bearer . Every bearer that is under the truck body that has a hole is it has rust coming through. Dirt and mud over the years has not helped the situation.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Justin,
Watching your work reminds me of the rust repairs I did to my truck body.
A small spot of rust turns into a replacement section when investigated. They look so innocent then need hours of work each.
And there does not seem to have been any pre-painting or rust prevention measures taken during manufacture.
But, . . when it is done, you know what you have got. And that it was your skill, time, effort that got it there.
Keep at it and you'll get there.
Have a nice day.
Sam.

Hi Sam,
Yeah I know what you mean. It seems every time I even think that I am close to finalizing the rust on the tray, I find something small like that last picture. And then it turns out to be a 2hr job.
But like you said, once it's finished I will know what I have. I still have to fix or replace the floor in the underneath storage compartment in the rear but hopefully that will be it.
Can't wait to start welding some new steel in.
Thanks for the comments.
Cheers

Sam, There was a rust prevention technique used back then. Most parts were Zinc plated before being primed. As I have been sand blasting many smaller parts for the Jimmy I am restoring, I can see the old paint and surface rust give way to a shiny surface that is followed quickly by the clean/bare sandblasted steel. I have made several inquiries as to what this 'shiny surface' can be, every answer has come back - Zinc Plate.
Regardless, doing the prep-work seems an endless task that is most tiresome and I have enjoyed following both of your threads and seeing the progress you have made. You guys are doing great work, keep it up!! Dave.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hey Dave,
Any comments good or bad is encouraging. Especially when it comes from experts like yourself , Sam and all the others here on G503. It is hard doing this stuff without a friend or a mate that is into the same thing. All my good friends are into fast cars ie Drag Racing, like I was....or should I say still am. But they think I am nuts for doing something like this. For me it is stress relief. Yes sometimes I get cranky and pissed off because something is not quite right, but panel work is semi new to me and trust me ANY feed back on how to get it right is awesome.
Honestly the main rust is in the tray, yes there is some in the cab, but I think the most effort needed is going to be in the tray. I could be wrong, and trust me I have been wrong a lot over the years.
Looking forward to keep posting over the coming years and hopefully, making lots of friends in the process.
Cheers again

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Justin, I think your go-fast buddies will want to go with you for a trail ride when your old girl is finished. I can't think of a better way to see the Aussie Outback than from the Cab or Troop Seats of a nicely restored Jimmy !! I wouldn't exactly call myself an expert yet. But I will be proud to be considered one of your mates. Anything I can do from my location to help you out, just let me know.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
I'm back,
Been away for work, and a million other excuses but now I am back.
Just started sanding bonnet, both guards and grille.
LH guard has been repaired looks like accident damage and the bonnet has some nice rust that will need repairs. RH guard is clean but has some dint's that will also need fixing.
Sand blasting is next for the front parts. I have also found "stars" and some numbers on the back tailgate of the tray. I will post them at a later time.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Justin,
I`ll go on a limb here with a theory for you, with some data to back it up!
Id say your GMC stayed in the army along time. My theory is it went to Korea with the army and while there, the US star was applied to it (as I have seen a picture of a few Aussie GMC's with a US stars on them on the AWM website during the Korean conflict, but i cant find it now to back me up!- instead I found these of other vehicles-
AWM photo ID- HOBJ3230
https://www.awm.gov.au/images/collectio ... BJ3230.JPG
With the numbers, I then went and checked what an ARN of (assuming there is a lost 1 in front of the 45) 145?88- that ends up being a jeep, but 145638 is a GMC! I think serial is 29547 A2, engine 270 309017.
I also checked:
145628- GMC 353 255207 A2, 270 337177
145648- GMC 247990 A2, 270 274242
145668- GMC 259712 A2, 270 337803
Thats all the GMC's in the 145XXX range (lots of jeeps and trailers mostly). No GMC's in the 45XXX range (too early inthe ledger books for them to appear!).
All that said, it assumes that number is part of an ARN- it of course can be anything!
However, id still be failry confident your GMC (if it exhibits signs of being in the Australian army) went to Korea or similar conflict where a US star was used (yet to see an Aussie vehicle with a US star during ww2 pictures, but never say never!), thats where it got that star.
Alternatively, and I may have missed it, do you have the ARN? I can search that at the drop of hat (but wont tell you much but abit of disposals info usually)... serial number searching is along way off!
Ian.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Ian,
Getting numbers off this GMC is very difficult. The Chassis number is CCKW353- 468232-A1
I am desperate to get the actual unit and bonnet numbers. But so far I am not having any luck at all. I know it was used in the Making of the Mini Series "Pacific" so it has had number coats of Jungle Green painted over the olive drab.
I can see a star in the middle of the front bumper, one on either side of the tray at the rear and one in the middle of the tailgate. It says, USA as well on the LHR of the tailgate. Some numbers I believe in the middle of the tailgate may have been put there when they painted it for the movie.
But it would mean a lot to me to find some original markings with unit and bonnet numbers. I know this is a stupid question but the 468232 on the chassis is not the same numbers they paint on the bonnet ???????????????
I am desperate for information.
Regards
Justin
